We went to the Panthers/Bears game yesterday. We have Panthers season tickets since my DH works for the Panthers. We are usually surrounded by other Panthers fans but yesterday we were surrounded by Bears fans.

My five year old son had just had his face painted - it was a Panther face and was $10. A lady behind us got excited when the Bears scored for the second time and spilt her beer all over DS's head. It was an accident but it made my son cry and it ruined his face painting.

We got up from our seats and I tipped the face painter $2 to touch up his face - still wasnt like new but it was good enough to satisfy DS. He got some ice cream and was fine...although he smelled like a brewery. We got back to our seats and the lady kept appologizing. She offered me cash - I think it was $5. I said that it wasnt necessary. DH said I should have accepted the money. I said that since it was accidental I shouldnt take it. DH's position is that it ruined the paint job and even though it was an accident, I should have accepted her help since her accident cost me more money.

What would YOU have done? In case it happens again.

It was an accident. I probably wouldn't have taken the money. Maybe if I was the lady, I would have bought your DS something else...a soda, some little Panthers thing...

I agree. She apologized (which unfortunately is more than a lot of people would do anymore)

I think you taught your son a great lesson in being gracious. And how adults should act. She did something accidentally, apologized and you accepted her apology. These are the life lessons that help raise a great kid.

I'd give the lady a pass and not expect any compensation for the "whoops" so I wouldn't have taken any cash from her. It would have been nice for her to buy a small something for your son as an "I'm sorry" gift, but again, I wouldn't have expected it.

It sounds like it turned out ok for your DS and that's the important thing.:thumbsup2

I don't know how Panthers games can get but Steelers games can get pretty wild. First time I took DS, he was like a deer in headlights. But he was ready for anything because I told him exactly what can happen during a game.

Now he's a Steeler game pro and I don't think anything would phase him. But to answer your question, no I wouldn't have taken the money. Things happen, NFL games can get wild . It was an accident plain and simple and it was nice she offered the money.

I probably would have taken her up on the money. More so because if I was the lady, I would have been mortified. I probably would have been such a pain in the #$ss about drenching a little kid that by the time I finished apologizing, your son probably would have left with a football jersey, cap, a huge foam #1 finger, all the food he could have eaten plus the face painting. LOL. Oh I would have felt sooo bad.

Well, I don't tolerate people spilling their beer on my kids' head so I would have accepted the $5!!

Personally I just don't understand why venues think they have to sell alcohol. Well, I know why. $$$$ is all they care about. But I don't understand why people think they need alcohol at a game or any kind of sporting event. So many people get obnoxious when drinking in places like that, and just don't know when to quit. It's ridiculous, especially when children are around. Yeah, it was probably an accident that she spilled her beer on your son's head. But if she wasn't drinking it, she wouldn't have spilled it. :)

Could've been a coke. Just as wet. Sorry, I like a brew with my giant humagous pretzel at the Philly's game.

I think you did the right thing in refusing the money (and she did the right thing in offering).

A brew is one thing, brew after brew after brew to the point of getting drunk and obnoxious is another.

It was nice of her to apologize and offer the money, but I would have declined.

I don't care for beer at all, but I have nearly spilled a coke and HAVE spilled popcorn in the tight confines of a sporting event. It is easy to get jostled and lose your grip on things. Given that the lady was so nice about it, it does not sound like she was drunk and out of control--it was just an accident and did not have anything to do with the alcohol.

Actually I find that many people do this "Before" they get into the stadium. Here in Philly stadium brews are priced out the roof. so most people tailgate before hand especially at football games, they walk in pretty lit. So not sure excluding alcohol is going to stop the obnoxious fan much.

We have a new system at citizen ball park (Phillies) that is working well. If you are sitting next to "Joe" idiot who is screaming drunk filled obsceneties to the opposing team while you're cringing, you can text the section of your seat to a number broadcast through out the stadium. Security has cameras that zoom in on the exact seat. they are so good, they can literally lip read Joe's stunning four letter converstaion iwth the opposing teams right fielder.
All anonymously & within a few minutes stadium security is there to "help" Joe find his car.

Where in the world did you get the lady was falling down drunk?

My goodness talk about bringing your personal agenda into something where it doesn't belong!

OP here - the lady wasnt drunk, just excited. And our stadium also has the text thing if there are obnoxious fans. You just text the location and the problem and they send security to check it out.

Maybe I'm reading a different OP, but I see no indication that anyone was drunk or obnoxious.

OP - It was nice of the lady to offer the money (I would have done so as well, or as another poster suggested, bought him something) but, like you, I'd probably have refused to take it if someone else offered it to me. I have up the offer by a restaurant to pay for dry cleaning after a waiter spilled a glass of wine on me, but not from an individual person.

Geez I agree about the agenda - nowhere does she say the woman was even remotely drunk - 1 or 2 beers or drinks over 4 hours does not make you a drunk.
I enjoy a drink at games and don't have to be transported home.

I would have done just what you did. Mostly because she apologized and from what you wrote was really sincere. I think you taught your DS a good lesson - not every wrong ends in a jackpot.
