This is a new one for me! I thought I was "in" on the latest wedding trends since I have been trying to plan one for the last year. Today I got invited to a "Greenback" shower. It said "no boxed gifts" Ever heard of this? I had to call and ask what it was. It is a CASH ONLY gift shower. The bride has also announced on facebook that she is having a greenback Jack & Jill shower in addition to the other greenback shower. I never think anything is tacky, but THIS I think is.



EEK I can imagine the older generations falling of their chairs, and passing out when they get wind of this!

DF thinks I should go dressed in all green with a toaster wrapped up in green paper, and pretend I didnt "get" it. lol. I think I might just pass on the shower, I barely even know this girl.

I have heard of these and I do think they are tacky. I like your DF's suggestion, just play dumb. You could even bring an environmentally friendly gift and tell everyone you thought it was because the bride and groom are really commited to "going green" when they start their new life together

Ugh, tacky tacky tacky. I'm getting married in April and doing nothing of the sort. I registered at Target and Macys. People could buy a gift from there or not at all. Honestly, I don't care. I just wanted the company of the people. I don't understand brides like this.

Same goes for having a money dance at the wedding or insisting that cold, hard cash is the only gift they want. Heck ya I'd rather have $$ than 4 tosters but hey- at least they were sweet enough to bring a gift!

Could get her some of those green recyclable shopping bags - they will come in handy, they are green and they are not boxed!

Personally, I usually do give cash as a shower or wedding gift.....money is usually the thing that young couples find most useful. HOWEVER, I find "theming" like this tacky and would probably give them a gift just to be contrary.

Good point. I would give cash no problem. So you got me there.

However I guess I would really need to know the person well to even go to a wedding shower, you know? Or it would have to be a relative and I was obligated.

I had a friend that did a money dance at their wedding. They announced ahead of time that the money would be going to a Breast Cancer group. This was to celebrate that the brides sister had been cured of cancer. I thought that was great.

This is the best idea EVER!!!!!!! This shower invite, by the way, is for a girl I work with, don't know well, and from what I have heard they have invited about 300 people to their shower, and only 150 are getting invited to the wedding. It is sufficient to say it is a gift grab shower.


I think I will skip the shower, but I might send a "go green" gift hahahaha I think that is hysterical.

The reason stupid ideas like this gain traction is because people go along with them to be nice or keep the peace.

A wedding is not a fundraiser and you are not obligated to contribute toward the cost of their wedding. Just say no.

This is why I hate weddings. When did couples get so greedy anyway?! I am convinced this sort of behavior is why the divorce rate is so high. People focus so much on money and gifts they forget to plan an actual marriage.

I think the greenback invite is very greedy. I'd send a tree. Or better yet, a seed.

"Wrap" the green gift in a reusable grocery bag.
