Another way to save your way to WDW

Okay I do ebay too and I'm confused...... Do you have to bring the book to the PO and ship it? so if you only make a penny and have to pay shipping say 2.26. and amazon refunds the shipping at 2.26 you are still only making a penny? I think I'm missing something.

I was just trying to figure out another way to make extra money. I always see books at yard sales. And I'm sure we have some laying around.

Thanks for any info. I'd like to start doing this.

You ship it media mail, which is only $1.42 for up to 1 pound, so you make some money on the shipping for smaller items. Also, many people do not pay US postage. You can ship for free if you are blind, in prison, etc. or have another exemption.

Yes, media mail does take a little longer. I always put in my ad "Priority shipping available".. The buyer pays more for PS, but Amazon gives the seller more for PS, so its just about a wash. Oh, and PS packaging materials are free at the Post Office. For media mail, you have to buy you own packaging, which can be quite expensive. I've found it best to buy mailers in bulk from Office Depot.

What kinds of books do you sell? hardback, softback, best sellers, mysteries, what? I have a couple of boxes of books that I am looking to get rid of but now I might try and sell them first before putting them on the curb. Thanks! :)

What is the best way to sell DVDs? Amazon, eBay or Half.com?

I just bought a 2-pack on eBay, but I already have one of the DVDs so I will want to resell it (or is that re-resell it?). It will be new and (I'm assuming) shrink wrapped.

I'd love to get about $6 for it, since the 2-pack was about $6 higher than I had wanted to spend on the single DVD I had wanted.

I've found children's books to sell the best--both books about children and for children. I had a couple of children's books sell within an hour of listing. However, my DVD's didn't sell at all. When the listing expired I didn't renew it, but I should because you don't pay to list. My advice to anyone wanting to try this is to just list one or two items at first, just to get the hang of how it works. It can be a little overwhelming to have several listings and you're still trying to feel your way through the logistics. Just as important as making money is saving it. Unless you have a place to stash such sums, it just goes for something else. However, most banks charge too many fees to make small deposits worthwhile. I discovered the ING Direct account through this board and find it a great way to save. Its an internet bank with no fees, no minimum deposits, no minimum balance, no maximum number of transactions per month, and pays 2.10% interest! Whenever I have some extra cash, such as from selling books or whatever, I immediately deposit it into this account so I'm not tempted to fritter it away. There's several threads about ING on this board you can read, or go to their website www.INGDIRECT.com for more information. If anyone is interested and would like more information, send me a pm. Happy savings!:flower3: :rose: :flower: :flower1: :daisy: :flower2: :cloud9:

I have a question about "expedited shipping." Does this automatically mean priority mail or does it mean first class or parcel post (not as fast as priority but certainly faster than media in many cases)?

We have 2 big tubs full of kids videos we've been saying we need to get rid of. I was thinking of putting them in a local consignment shop but the maximum they will allow you to price videos at is $1 and they take 20% of your sales so that is 80 cents per video. I'm sure I can make more this way. We've gone to all DVD now so the boys haven't watched these in forever.

I started listing books (mostly college texts) on half.com in January and did pretty well the first few months and then just a few orders here and there but when they started talking about ceasing operations in July I started listing the same books on amazon.com and quite honestly I sell A LOT more on amazon!

I will NOT pay for an EBAY store to sell my books once half closes ...not worth it for me. Amazon deposits money to your account every 2 weeks instead to of the 15th and 30th of the month.

ksoehrlein- try listing them on both half.com and amazon.com, you have nothing to lose as you pay no fees unless something sells and then it's just taken from you profit so you never have to "front" the money.

I second the ING account suggestion. I opened mine up just yesterday. I just wanted to mention that if someone goes directly to the website and signs up, they will not get the $25.00 thank you bonus from ING. You must get a referral from someone and open up thru the link they send you to get the bonus $25.00. Once you set up your own account, you can refer your family and friends and then get other thank you bonuses when they set up theirs. It is against the rules to ask for or give referrals on the Boards, as mentioned above, you must PM someone and ask them for a referral. Happy savings everyone.

Ok, I have a question for all of you sellers. Do you normally allow international shipping? I am wondering if that would open more selling options. Or would I just end up losing money with the additional costs (even if Amazon is reimbursing)? I've never sent anything internationally so I am not familiar with costs. I calculated how much it would cost to mail one of my books in the U.S. (media mail) plus the delivery confirmation, and Amazon isn't reimbursing enough money. I will actually lose a little, plus the cost of shipping supplies.

Where would you sell 80's romance novels? On ebay in lots or on amazon? My dh was at a auction yesterday and picked up 5 big boxes of books for .50 for all:eek: . I'm trying to unclutter my house but my DH keeps bringing things home for me to keep or sell:crazy: . Most of the books are Harlequin or Regency or the like and I'm not sure where to put them.
Thanks for the help!!

Yes, as another poster pointed out, if you choose to open your account directly through ING rather than go through a referral from an existing customer you won't receive the $25 sign on bonus, and you won't receive the bonus referrals to give to others, for which you can make $10 each. I just mentioned that you can go through ING directly and skip the referral thing because some people feel better dealing direct with the company and are hesitant to give out their name and email address to a stranger. I know I was at first. But then after reading so much about it here on this board I decided to give it a try. Its not a scam, or anything shady. However, to reassure yourself I suggest going to their website first and checking them out www.ingdirect.com. Then decide how you wish to procede. Please note that if you open your account with a referral from an existing customer that person who gives you the referral knows nothing about your account. We don't even know if you opened one or not. We just get an email from ING stating that we got a $10 bonus from a referral who oipened an account. ING is very good at protecting privacy. However you do it, ING is a great way to save. Good luck!:boat:  :cloud9:

just wanted to post a thanks to the OP for starting this! I've been tossing videos into a box to take to a consignment sale for some time now. I'd sold things on half.com before and was halfheartedly considering listing them there but figured since they were switching over to ebay that I'd just save myself the hassel. I listed about half of the videos and probably 20 books this weekend. As of now I've already sold enough to pay for our dinners at Ohana and Chef Mickey's for our next trip. Not bad for 2 days!

I'd never sold on amazon before and I must say it was quite easy. The listings go very fast so I was able to list a bunch of things quickly. :)

OK, if anyone out there is sitting on a pile of old kids videos...do yourself a favor and GET LISTING!!!!!!!!!! I've had 12 sales just since the last time I checked email today. All together I've sold more than 20 of their videos. They "low end" has been for about $2.50 each and the "high end" being $11.00. Old pregnancy and care of baby books are selling quite well too. :)

Now I have to go buy more bubble mailers to send this stuff out! :) Thanks again for motivating me to do this, not only has it helped with saving but it's helping to clean out my far too cluttered basement too! :teeth:

I have now cleared $71 in less than a week. How is everyone shipping their books? Do you use bubble mailers? If so, where do you get them and how much do you pay? I bought some at Dollar Tree for $1 for two.

Question about listing videos/dvds on Amazon, what price should I expect; more than a penny?

Can I sell laser discs on Amazon? I have a pretty good selection of laser discs that I bought way before dvds came along. I don't want to throw them out if I can make even a little bit of money on them.

There is another place to sell books online, Advanced Book Exchange

the only recommendation I can give them is we buy a lot from them at work and so far we're happy with the service.

(edited to add)

Thanks to everyone regarding ING, I've opened my account and referred all my family, what a great way to start saving!

Can you use the ING banking account for you Amazon account that they deposit into.

I don't think so. You have to enter the routing number and account number for your account. I guess you could call ING and ask if they have that info for you. Otherwise just have Amazon deposit it into the account you have linked to ING and then you transfer it to ING yourself. :)

I started a change jar last week. We're not going until mid-October. I just keep emptying out the change from my wallet nightly. By the time our trip rolls around, I want to be able to enjoy Disney to the fullest so I'm hoping that those quarters, dimes, and nickels keep adding up fast.

You can find those numbers by viewing your ING account and clicking on the link entitled "Direct Deposit Form for this Account".

ING may or may not let you link to Amazon. I tried to link my ING account to PayPal, and apparently, ING didn't trust PayPal's security measures, so they did not allow it. I don't know if they would allow Amazon or not, but you can give it a try.

PayPal is really great about security. One of the things I like is that they ask you a different question each time you log in, which would make it pretty tough for hackers (yet still easy for you) to log in to your account.
