OK here's my problem....I have applied to the court for my 'memoradum of convictions' to be abe to obtain a visa for our 2nd visit to orlando.

The original court I apperared in has now shut down, so I applied to the county HQ where the records are kept.

The court phoned me today and said that thier records only go back to 1996 and as my convictions (car theft 1977 and drink driving 1995) were before this date, they had no record there.

This is starting to be a lot of hassle.Do I risk it and travel on the visa waiver or try more to get my memorandum.(like contacting the police) ?

Do the U.S immagration know if anyone has been arrested in the past? I don't think so. Also, does anyone really get turned back once they land?

I have been to the U.S before in 2002 so why not now?

I can't answer your question regarding the visa. However I do know that people are turned back. I have seen it happen. I've had all kinds of problems at immigration, mainly because my DH and DD's are American citizens and I used to have a Green Card. In Dec we flew through PA and the guy at immigration even called my DH over and asked him a bunch of questions!

What happens when people are turned back, do they end up like Tom Hanks in the film? :D Are they asked to organise a flight back to the UK ? Do they get the option of applying for a visa at the airport ?

This has interested me for a while, not for my own sake i should add...

if Mark Thatcher can get in you can
Paulh

The people that I saw sent back (from various countries) were kept in the immigration office, as soon as a flight became available back to their country of origin they were put on it! However this was a few years ago, and things have probably changed since then!

I dont think I would risk it. What I would do is obtain a letter from the court confirming the telephone call and then contact the American Embassy for advice. Its an awful lot of money to take a chance on being sent back home as soon as you land.

That totaly amazes me....the guy's been convicted of funding terrorism for gawd's sakes....It annoys me how its a "global fight against international terrorism", yet it clearly makes a difference who the terrorism is against.

Arent the thatchers friends of the US?

:rolleyes1

My husband had the same problem, you have to request your details from National Identification Service, Subject Access Office, Room 350, New Scotland Yard, London, SW1 H 0BG they will have all your details on file. This information was found on the American Embassy in London website. My husband would not book our flights until he had his visa application approved. If you risk it and travel on the visa waiver, we were told that he may have been refused entry and sent back on the next plane. We have no idea how they would know you had a record, but was not going to take any chances! Also, you have to fill in the visa waiver application form on the plane, and one of the questions is have you ever been arrested or convicted.
