Ive been trying to stay positive and keep my heart light, but Im struggling.
Things are looking more and more grim for my niece.
Shes been in the hospital going on four weeks now, due to an infection that is causing her to spike high fevers.
She had something called a Broviac catheter put in about four weeks ago. Its an instrument that is surgically implanted near the heart and is used for I.V.s and injections so they dont have to keep sticking her veins.
Anyway, when the Broviac was put in, it brought on an infection that they cant get under control now. Shes been on several antibiotics, anti-fungal and antiviral agents. Nothing is working because she has no immune system.
So the stem cell transplant is in a state of limbo because they cant give her the chemotherapy she needs first while shes running fevers. And her fevers have been pretty severe, causing brain damage.
This is where were at now. It really looks hopeless.
