I planted a Japanese Maple next to my fish pond well it has gotten TOO BIG in only 3 years.....I really need to move it or we will not be able to see the pond soon :rotfl2:

Has anyone move a JM and how should I go about it?

I would prune it but I hate to do that, it is so nice the way it is.

I know I should probably move it in the fall but other than that I am lost. Never have transplanted a tree.

TIA

It's beautiful. A shame to move it. We've moved trees but not a Japanese Maple. Last year we moved 3 Weeping Willows. They went into shock and dropped their leaves but came back this year like nothing ever happened. I'm not an expert at it just done it a lot.

Let's see... I wrap them in an old sheet or blanket to move them. Try not to break the ball. Roll them into the hole. Make sure you have the tap root and plenty of orginal soil & the soil level is the same after it's planted. Water the hole before you put it in to get rid of the air & then after it's in.

I am afraid it might be under the pond!

I may just have to suck it up and prune it:( at least that is safer than killing it. And JM are so expensive to replace.

I just can't decide. :confused3

It is so beautiful! If it didn't make it and you wrecked the pond too. What a nightmare! Besides what could you put there that would be as stunning?
Makes me want to try it, if only I had the space.
