Another tipping question.....

After listening to the podcast, I have another tipping question. Is resort charge the same as a tip? I stayed at a resort that automatically added a 20% resort charge to everything, since I was the lowest person on the totem pole I never had to pick up the tab, but one of my managers asked me if resort charge and tip were the same....I was honest and said I did not know. There was a line on the receipt for tip, so I thought it might not be the same. But, I couldn't help but think on the $300 dinner tab, they added $60 for resort charge and then another $54 for tip...that is quite a tab. I guess people who can stay at these resorts can afford it, but this was for business and I know I could not afford to stay there if I had to pay.

I have heard of resorts charging a "resort fee" that would be added to you hotel bill.

That can sometimes cover parking, use of the safe, the daily newspaper etc.....but I have never heard of a resort fee being added to a restaurant tab, especially in addition to a mandatory gratuity.

Maybe someone else knows about this.

Kevin - glad to see you back on the boards and feeling all better

I understand resort fees, like at Gaylord Palms (which btw  ). This fee was in addition to the parking and the daily $20 resort fee. When I read the reviews on TripAdvisor they all would post to come with your wallet open.....and that is how we felt the two days we were there. I don't want to post the name of the hotel, but it is in Boca and recently went through a major rehab.

I work at a hotel and I have never heard that. Granted I don't work in a resort hotel. But for what it's worth, my hotel charges an occupancy tax and for things like in-room dining, spa etc, there is an automatic 19% gratuity. There is also another line for additional gratuity if the guest feels like adding more, but that was optional. We do have some guests that don't want to pay the automatic 19% so we modify that on a case-by-case basis.
