Another tipping question. Do you tip when you pick up food?

I don't tip for take-out, or Starbucks, etc. I figure I pay the extra money for that cooked food.

I do tip for restaurants & food delivery

no we dont tip when picking up food, ive never heard of such a thing for pickup.

I do not tip for take out. Our local Subway shop had a tip jar on the counter, but the manager told me their headquarters made them get rid of it.

I've been noticing tip jars everywhere lately! I even saw one at Borders the other day, and I'm not talking about the "give a penny, save a penny" type of little cups either. What's next, tip jars at the bank? Hey why not, someone has to count your money!

For take out and fast food places, I do not tip.

Borders!!! I suppose next it will be the hardware stores, or Sears. Or Walmart. ;(

I usually tip for everything, even Subway. I know, I know, but I still do it! LOL

I actually wondered about this last week. We ordered "curbside" take-out last week for the first time with a bunch of people. Bill came to $108.23. We had $110 so that's what I gave the girl, because I was really unsure as to whether I was supposed to give any tip or not.

Obviously, if a tip is expected I would have given more than a little over $1, but I was honestly not sure if the proper etiquette.

From this thread, it sounds like a personal choice as to whether you feel you should tip or not.

A couple months ago I went into Chilis to buy a gift certificate. The hostess rang it up and took my credit card, and when she handed it back to me the tip line was highlighted as well. There is no way I was going to tip her for ringing up a gift certificate.

Maybe $1-2, but no way someone is getting 10-20% for taking 2 minutes to ring my take out up.

I'm with you.

First of all, highlighting the tip line would automatically guarantee them not getting a tip from me. Getting a tip for ringing up a gc= :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Oh yes, the generation that has been taught that they can get something for doing practically nothing... What do I get for doing this?  Entitlement mentality at work!

I tip when I get takeout from a restaurant. Some restaurants have one person who takes the takout orders, ect, is paid like the waitstaff and is wage dependent on tips.

I tip when I pick up from a diner or an Applebees, but not a pizza joint or chinese restaurant.

No I do not. I will not. A tip is for GOOD SERVICE. Not for a to go order. Sorry, not for filling a cup of coffee at a coffee bar either. I hate tip jars too. I think this has gotten WAY out of hand. jeez...

What is the difference betweeen Applebees and a pizza joint? I don't understand????

No, I would not! And when did tipping become expected and not something that is earned?

I would love a society that paid people reasonable wages for their work and we would not have to tip for someone to just do their job.

Tipping is just getting out of hand and you never know who you are to tip and what is expected any more.

I always tip at sit down restaurants but not many other places.

I think the difference is that at a regular carry-out place like a pizza or sub shop, the staff is paid as a non tipped position. When you order from a place like Applebees, its the regular waitstaff that makes $2.xx an hour fixing your order and bringing it to you. I know when we order from lots of places its a waiter that makes your salad and packs up your order and brings it to you. They aren't paid as much as a person at a pizza place because they are considered waitstaff and they depend on tips to make their money. When we found that out, thats when we started tipping for carry-out.

I think it showed bad taste on the part of the person who took the phone order and put a star near the tip line. After the fact I would have made a complaint to the manager (as they may not be aware of this practice), because I think this is inappropriate.

For the record, I do tip the pizza delivery guy, the Carside-to-go people who bring your food out to your car and the Sonic waitresses. But I do not tip for carry out. I have said it before and I will say it again, tipping has gotten totally out of control.

I totally do not tip for Pizza Take out or Fast Food. With the sorry service we get at the one Subway in our town I feel like asking for a discount rather then giving them a tip. We've gone 3 times since we moved here in Jan. Each time different server and each time snarly, ignore you talk to their co-workers, that's too much trouble service. Sigh and we loved the subway in our old town. Delivery and In restaurant service gets a tip. If I was ordering take out from Sylvesters or KFC (where we know employees that go the extra mile for us) we give a tip. Otherwise it depends if they perform a service. Just ringing it into the till is the least they can do. In fact they have too do it.
If someone had been snarky like that with me I'd give them a tip allright. That those kind of bad manners rates a call to the manager not monetary compensation.

MELSMICE
you should tip at the curbside to go, they depend on tips and are in a waitstaff position and only get paid $2.13 an hour in nj . not in take out places but when you go into a sitdown restaurant like say red lobster/olive garden they do only get paid their tips to get your food ready at least 2-3 dollars is good for that
