Another Tipping Pet Peeve

At Starbuck's, if I ask for the "middle size" and they don't say, "You mean 'grande'", or if I ask for light and they don't ask me if I want whipped cream on it, I give a tip. Intelligence deserves to be rewarded.
If that is your definition of intelligence, you go right ahead and tip.

I don't mind places having tip jars. What I do mind, and this has happened to me a couple times, is when I'm asked if I want my change, or how much of my chage do I want back. WTH! I hate when they do that, and never leave a tip then.

Me Too! Isn't that terrible? I believe the appropriate comment from the server should be, "I'll be right back with your change". Let me be the one to tell you we're all set.

I just can't believe with all that wonderful Ice cream on the Boardwalk you would buy from one of those terrible looking trucks. :lmao:

However every place on the boards have the Tips jugs on them as well.

I'm in service and I never get tipped.

It just seems the employers are letting them put these things out as an excuse to not pay them more.

Hey, the ice cream was for a 3 year old! You better believe "I" didn't eat that garbage!! I got the good stuff at Marble Slab! :rotfl:

we were at cold stone gettting ice cream a the register paying when my 6 yo ds looked down and found a dime. he picks it up and announces that he found it. the girl at the register told him to put it in the tip jar. the look i gave her could have melted all the ice cream in the store!
:rotfl: How tacky, telling a little kid who just hit the jackpot to give it the tip jar!! Glad you let her have an icy stare...

I ignore tip jars totally-like they are not even there. And the other extreme that really makes me mad is when the "fine" restaurant adds on their tip at the bottom because there were too many at your table spending money and drinking a lot of expensive wine, etc..Management allows the server to add on their idea of what is appropriate, which is bad enough, but they DON'T tell you that they already did it. So if you are having a great time talking and drinking when they bring the check, you may not even notice it. I have caught this little scheme more than once..now I know better. Once we didn't catch it, and not only did we "double tip", but the second tip was actually a tip on the original tip!!! :furious:

Second is for the servers - I hate people who try to manipulate the tip you will give them by how they bring back your change. Do you really think that if you only give me $20s and $10s back that I will be forced to tip you $10 on my $20 total bill? I love making them make another trip to give me the correct change.

My DH used to tend bar and he would do the opposite. He would give back for example, a $5 bill and 5 singles instead of a $10 bill. He said it made it easier for them to give a tip, rather than try to find change and then just give up and leave without giving a tip.

Restaurants do this because large parties usually undertip -- and often grossly undertip. You will notice that if they are going to do this, it will be mentioned on the menu: ("15 percent gratuity added for parties of 8 or more" or something like that). I'm pretty sure it's not a scheme meant to bilk people out of extra tip money.

We have a coffee shop (not starbucks) on the 1st floor of my building at work. I avoid going there BECAUSE they have a tip jar.

Interestingly, from a page on tipping etiquette:

Thanks for the link. Very helpful indeed
Im led to believe some of us Brits have a reputation for not tipping or not tipping enough.
To be honest , its a bit of a grey area for us, as tipping is not a way of life like it is in the US.
I remember our first trip to Florida in 2000, I think the only person we tipped was the baggage handler when we returned to Orlando airport for our flight home. I was truly mortified to find at a later date that I hadnt tipped the people that I should have.

I always tip around the 20% mark and luckily havent recieved what I would call poor service as yet in 6 trips to the US, so have never been in the position to have to decide to tip less or report to a manager.

Back to the original thread theme, if I see one of these jars, they get nothing.
