Another thread has me scared

We are booked for October 22nd and really looking forward to it. Surely all the postings cannot be that wrong and know we shall have a great time. Our grip is with Disney Cruise Line clerical staff who will not give us any information at all and we find this very frustrating. We are trying to make our trip a family reunion and celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary (belatedly) but seem unable to get this sorted because of lack of correspondence from the cruise line. Our travel agent here has asked that we do the arrangements ourselves but still to no avail and we are rather annoyed by this.
We love Disney and also are Disney Vacation Club members but not having booked through them with our points they cannot help. We have no toll free numbers nor planning dvd. We are to get one due to the kindness of a member of this board and are really booking forward to living the magic in advance.

Feel every holiday is what you make it yourself and this will be our first cruise and with flights is cosing us all quite a lot of money. We are to stay in Florida for three weeks a week each side of the cruise and this is all arranged. If only someone from Disney Cruise Line would speak to us to get the last bit sorted. Well, expect we will soon.

Sorry to be the bearer of BAD NEWS, but since you booked thru a Travel Agency, that Travel Agency MUST Deal with DCL and NOT YOU! Once you book thru a TA, DCL will not deal with you.

If they do not want to help, switch Agencies!

Good Luck! :wizard:

We are on the same cruise as you!! We are cruising with a bunch of friends and their kids. There will be (2) 10 year old girls, (1) 9 year old boy, (2) 8 year old girls, (2) 8 year old boys, (1) 7 year old boy, (1) 6 year old boy, (1) 5 year old boy and (1) 4 year old boy. I don't know if your kids fall into any of these age ranges but if they do we can set them up on line first. We went on the Western on 1/15/04 and loved it and that was the cruise that everyone was complaining about here because it missed Grand Cayman & Castaway Cay. It was still a perfect family vacation!! You'll love it!! We already have a Cruise Meets thread going, come check it out!

:worried: I just read a thread about the ship being boring and really not worth it, I am really afraid that I made a mistake in booking this cruise. We are going on the Feb 25th 2006 Western Carib. on the Magic. This trip is costing over $5000 and I know we could go to a lot of place with that money and we could go RCCL and ahve a suite with concierge service.

Please someone let me know that the Disney Cruise Line is not example of the Disney name not living up to expectation. I am a DVC member and love all things Disney but I know that they tend to let somethings go somtimes until enough people complain qand then they fix it.

Is the Magie Western better than the Eastern and do you recomend upgrading from catagory 4 to 3 to make earlier reservations for the kids club, the spath, and Paulo's. The cost difference is $2,000, is it worth it?

I know that I have asked a lot but that thread freaked me out

Judy

Judy - I can't agree more with everyone here! Cruising isn't for everyone and some people take setbacks with more ease. We were on the 2/5 cruise and there were some setbacks that we encountered (our excursion to Trunk Bay in St Thomas/St John was cancelled, no Castaway Cay due to strong currents) but overall we had a blast!!! Also, being bored was not a problem at all for us (DD10 who LOVED the lab) DH and a friend of mine who had never cruised before...my friend is my Disney pal - she goes to WDW with DH and I ever time we go and proclaimed she now wants to only Disney Cruise!!! I had a terrible time on my first cruise and was nervous about this one but went into it with the mindset that fun is what you make and decided when we booked that I would try to do everything possible to have a good time. We went to the deck parties and to the nightclubs, we saw every show and went to every dinner. We enjoyed Palos for dinner and brunch and made sure we got to the spa at least twice :) If you want to have a good time, you will. Sometimes you just have to be a part of the fun and enjoy it more.

As for upgrading, I wouldn't do it. If you time it appropriately, you can book your spa and Palo ressies (do Palo first and make sure you also do a brunch as well as dinner!) -- spend the extra $2k on all of the jewelry! BTW, we did like the Eastern better than the Western but that is just us!

 Happy Valentines Day to all, let me just tell you that it is what you make it, my DH and I are very fussy and have a friend who is very fussy and told us do it you will love it and we did. If you go in with pre-conceived notions or expectations you are bound to find fault, we had a blast and I had been on this board for at least six months so I definately had some thoughts about what it would be like. I cannot tell you how wonderful it was. Yes there are issues I think with the kids programming but in fairness to them I saw a lot of parents who just dropped their kids off with drinks in hand at 10:00 in the morning and left them all day. The kids programming is safe and clean. Is it school, no I don't think so. They definately have a challenge there. The wait servers were awesome they become like family, the room stewards well we just wished we could have taken ours home with us. He (Ary) was so kind and gentle to us and our DS. We just loved it give it a try.

Message boards like this can sometimes be a double edged sword. On the very positive side they give you tons more information than you can get out of any travel guide or brochure. You go in knowing much more than the average traveler.

On the negative side that can also lead to much higher expectations.

Many people that I have seen disappointed over the years have been disappointed because of expectations based on what they have read. If they don't get towel animals, or don't get magic tricks at dinner. The pools are too small or too crowded. Even something bigger like missing Castaway Cay.

If you go in looking at the whole cruise experience: spending time with your family on a beautiful ship, getting as much food as you could possibly want, having broadway class shows available (which I think at least Dreams and Golden Mickey's are), having a variety of movies over the course of the cruise. All wonderful things to enjoy.

As others have mentioned a cruise is what you make of it. No one voyage is going to be perfect. If you can go with the flow and make your own fun you'll be fine and i think you will enjoy it (at least we do).

Is it for everyone? No it isn't. Think back on why you booked it in the first place. If you were doing it becuase it seemed everyone is - then you may be disappointed. If, however, you feel that cruising is something you and your family might enjoy and you are ready for a new adventure then go for it!

Everyone is giving you a lot of great advice, so I won't repeat what everyone has already said. The only other thing I can add is that if I were you, I'd take a look through some of the Personal Navigators posted on various websites so you get an idea of what you have ahead of you onboard. And as far as ashore, read the descriptions of the many shore excursions and read some reviews from the boards. I think doing these two things will give you a good idea of what you're paying for.

Exactly! And another one is all the reports of free upgrades. It really doesn't happen nearly as often as these boards make it seem.

You know, I was hesitant to go on our second cruise because our first one exceeded our expectation so much. Everyone, including our head server Nadege, was wonderful. The DIS group that we cruised with was great also and it was so nice seeing someone we knew everywhere on the ship. DH & I knew that the chances were great that the next time things would be more of what we expected the first time. Well, after switching our dining rotation so that we could have our same server, we relaxed. We ended up having a great time. Of course, we did experience one server who was taking care of the tables next to ours who was more than a little grumpy. :( We were next to the serving station and he would yell at another server often. The head server was called over several times during the week. We made jokes with our servers about it to ease the tension. We could tell that they were embarrassed that we had witnessed any of it.

I have cruised 4 times on the Magic (twice with children and twice without) and have been frequenting this board since before our first cruise in October 2000. Last week I cruised the Wonder for the first time (02/6-10) and after having read all I have on the Wonder (I have read more negatives on the Wonder than the Magic) my expectations were not very high. This trip rivaled any of the others - the food, service and entertainment were absolutely OUTSTANDING!!! I took a dear friend as a retirement "treat" and she is now hooked and wants to look at pricing for a 7 day.

Everyone comes from different backgrounds and experiences so it isn't always the same - even when comparing different cruisers reports from the same cruise.

After being on these boards, I found out I was Overprepared! It is my nature to not want to miss anything, plus I am a photo nut. So, I was under the deception that the cruise would be a chance for me to relax. My husband and parents, did,! but I was like a Hamster on a wheel going faster and faster! Mainly because I wanted to get a picture of my girls doing this, with this character, etc!
As a travel agent with 4 young kids(1,3,8,9)doing Disney before the Wonder, I really should have known better! The repacking really stinks!
I was the mother of 4, plus the tour guide-it has taken me 2 weeks to recover! But I have great pictures!! :flower:
But, Disney lived up to everything! The only true negative was our server, Donovan from Jamaica--he acted like he really did not want to be there!
Thanks to these boards we were at the terminal at 10:30. Stupid me did not do the paperwork before, I THOUGHT I would do it on the plane-but had 2 jumping, spinning tornados on me for 4 hours! Best advice DO the paperwork ahead of time! When I turned it in, I have 2 Chinese adopted daughters with US passports-they had to find a supervisor to approve it, which took extra time. We boarded behind 200 or more people, and were able to eat a relaxing lunch at topsiders then make Flounder and Palo rezzies no problem.
I never saw my 2 boys (8,9) except on CAstaway Key-where they were with us the entire day. They loved the clubs and the funny thing I found out last week was that they never knew they could check themselves out...but, they never wanted to anyway! My 3 yr old was fine the first 2 days with the club, only spent 2 hrs each day. But, I am chucking it up to her exhaustion--and to my frantic hamster pace, she was bawling 45 minutes at scuttles cove before they paged me. Then she wanted nothing to do with the club after that. That was were it was fabulous to be traveling with the grandparents as the safetynet!

Someday I will do a trip report, If I want to truly relax, I need to do a condo type beach vacation with a nanny! I would love to be bored!

I reframed from giving my two cents on the other post (my family would be shocked), but I feel compeled to this time. I think what is important is that "your" family vacation is what you make of it. I get the impression on this board that people get disappointed and have a dissatisfied time when the weather is not good or they have the wrong rotation for Pirates night. We were in Animators for Pirates night and yes it does take away from the two activities, but it was still fun and what made it great was that I did it with family. Sometimes even a bad trip can be fun when you do it with someone else, like family. We pay for our children and grandchildren to go, which is more than 5K. On our last trip the oldest son did not have a good time, for whatever reason. He and his wife went as far as to say that Carnival had better food. My thought, go on Carnival. Dh and I decided that we were not going to let them ruin it for us or others. We booked another while on that cruise and they did not. We will miss them, but as far as I am concerned it is his loss. Just yesterday we were talking about the cruise and he was comenting that he did not see something. Why, who knows. He chose not to make the most of a great opportunity, shame on him. The one who will suffer and did is my DGD(4) because she wants to return. It is a shame that he and pthers have their own agenda. DCL will give you good treatment, but it is up to you to keep it in perspective.

Bottom line, do not have high expetations, enjoy every moment as if it was your last and be thankful you are in a position that you can afford to take such a lavish trip. When you can put all that in perspective anythig that Disney does only makes the trip better.

Have a great time, enjoy your family and take each moment as it happens. Please remember that DCl does not control the seas either. The rougher it is the more I laugh. I figure it is like one of their rides at WDW and we are getting it for free.

We did the magic western and were not bored for one minute..in fact, just the opposite. We had so much fun, we didn't even get to check out the whole ship and all the activities. There is so much to do, so little time.

The ports were all excellent.

We cruised on the 2/5 Magic, this was our second cruise with DCL. Both times were on the Eastern Itinerary and both times were in the Winter. I agree with the poster that these boards and all of the other sites out there on DCL are a double edged sword - some folks tend to have way too high of an expectation. And there are no more secrets anymore - deck 7 is no longer a secret, it is hard to get into palos these days, and most cruises are full so there are no at port upgrades - but that is the internet & the nature of the beast.

Because of the double edged sword and folks with very, very high expectations alot of the blame tends to fall on DCL.

The seas on the 2/5 cruise were very rocky and alot of folks were sick - I could not get over all of the folks I heard commenting on DCL and the weather, hey it is mother nature not DCL - and this can be the price you pay to travel this time of year. As far as not docking at CC, even after the first attempt you could not believe the line at guest services with people complaining, yes it is unfortunate, however being on a ship wearing shorts, even though it was cool is better than being at home shoveling snow. Yes, several excursions on St Thomas were cancelled but it could have been worse - it could have been raining.

It can be a double edged sword thought for those who have cruised before. On our first DCL cruise (2002), DCL really exceeded our expectations however I think because of this we had quite a few letdowns. First of all, we booked an inside last time - we were on a upper deck. This time we opted for a porthole on deck 2 - would rather be inside minus a window than under beatstreet. Last trip our serving team and stateroom hostess were great, I was disappointed this time - we commented to our headserver that we don't eat seafood, however every night he continued to tell us about the great seafood specials. Last cruise, only had to tell the head server once he remembered. I agree with the post about the assistant server doing most of the work, it does seem that way. And yes, on "tip" night everyone does seem a bit more friendly. On our first cruise our stateroom hostess knew we had late seating and would not come to the room until after 8:30, however this trip the stateroom hostess knocked every night about 7:50 to 8pm trying to come in, she obviously didn't get it.

I think that Disney seems to somewhat be slipping in their customer service, the CM's are being spread way too thin. On our last cruise the CM's seemed to go out of their way to make sure you were happy or that there were no kids in the quiet pool - this time at the quiet pool there were only about 2 CM's roaming around to make sure this happened and it did happen but 2 people taking drink orders speaking to guests can't control everything. And as far as Capt Tom stating that they never miss CC - I for one don't believe that is true, I may be wrong but our Happy Limo driver mentioned to us that the seas have been very rough this late fall/winter and the ship has missed. I don't think disney has to go out of there way for customers anymore - they only have 2 ships and tons & tons of disney followers willing to pay to take a DCL.

Before I am flamed though it was a great trip and we will do it again, why because it is wonderful family time in a nice atmosphere with in my opinion a great kids club.

I could go on and on about the ups and downs but people are going to form their own opinions and some will take it personally. All, I can say is try it - go and spend time with your family, hopefully the weather will be beautiful, someone else is doing the cooking, the cleaning and the driving. The trip is what you make of it, just have fun!

I'm one of those people who was disappointed in our cruise and it wasn't because they didn't serve my brand of ketchup, because of the weather, or because I got the wrong dining rotation. lol (In fact, I think we had the perfect dining rotation!!) I've re-written this message a few times and I don't know how to say what I want to say... We were hoping for some adult free time in addition to family time and it just didn't happen. We've had better kids' club experiences on other vacations. (I'm not saying DCL club wasn't good - just our personal comparison.) I actually found the opposite of some other posters - I felt like we were constantly "going" on the cruise when DH & I were wanting more down time on deck with a book. Of course, that was not the fault of DCL - I wanted to get those character photos and go to the shows and other stuff. DH & I both felt like we needed a vacation from our vacation when we got home! We also thought it was too expensive compared to other vacations where we've had better overall experiences.

I think everyone will have different experiences on DCL and both positive and negative messages here just give you tips and ideas on what to expect or not expect. As you can see, my disappointment stems from my hopes and not from something DCL "did." And, while I say we were disappointed, we still had a good vacation! We still take away fun memories and great photos!

We are also spending way too many £s.......but wouldnt be doing so if we didnt think the cruise would be worth our hard-earned money. Dont dwell on any problems you MAY have on the cruise (remember, every family is different)..........just sit back and enjoy the ride. See you on 26th! Life is what you make it, and way too short to worry unnecessarily.Happy sailing. Nat

If anyone checks our previous posts, you can see we have fallen in love with the DCL experience. We went on our first cruise with fairly high expectations, and they were way exceeded. So on the second one which was our first 7 day, our expectations were again high and exceeded. Third time we were a little worried that the bloom would be off the rose, and yet again we loved it. We have now done 5 cruises, one 4 night and 4 7 nights. 4 with kids one just the two of us.

For us this has turned into the perfect vacation experience. But that doesn't mean it will be for everyone. We continue to have very high expectations, however we temper them with a healthy does of reality and flexibility. We have found that the saying in our signature is often very true, things work out best for those who make the best out of how things work out.

That being said, will everything be perfect, nope. Will you like every activity or every dish, nope and do some people have truly bad times for a variety of reasons, yep. Don't let the experiences of those of us on the boards, positive or negative totally color your perception. Take the information, put it up against your family's likes and dislikes and figure out what will work for you. Then go, have fun! But don't try to do or experience everything! Just enjoy!

Hi my kids were 9 and 11 and didn't spend alot of time in the clubs but were very lucky to have a couple of boys that they had emailed pre cruise from the cruise meet board. They really enjoyed the freedom they had on the ship and were required to check in with us and let us know their plans but we did have a great time. My DH was very worried that my expectations were too high from reading the boards constantly. We all had things we wanted to do and we would check out the Navigators and check off what we wanted to do the next day. Sometimes we made it sometimes not. All I can say is that we all had a wonderful time and although we have our second cruise planned - I am worried that if we did try another cruiseline we would be disappointed. We tried to make it a family vacation with alittle down time for all of us and it worked out well. I don't think you will be sorry with your decision. Just my opinion.
