ok, family wants to eat at San Angel. I hate mexican food, but see a couple things on kids menu I would order. but it says """""Kids' menu items for children ages 9 and younger."""""
on the menu on the disney website.
sooooooooooooo
do you ignore this?

In the QS restaurant's it's not a problem, just order and head to the table. At the TS restaurants, just have one of the kids order what you want, and you can order a adult meal for one of them, then switch. Some friends 12 year olds order off the kids menu, and its never been a problem, but it is left to the discretion of the restaurant. Also some of the restaurant will make an adult portion of a kids meal, you will need to ask, if this is possible.

As noted above, you're basically at the mercy of the server/restaurant policy and EPCOT world showcase and Downtown Disney tend to be the least likely to allow it (because they may not actually be operated by Disney). I'd suggest looking at aps and desserts. If you can find something off of that (San Angel Inn has a Caesar Salad which is pretty basic), then you could eat with the family and then get yourself something for dinner further along in the World Showcase.

The two San Angel restaurants are two of the few that generally will not allow it. I have heard that they will make an adult portion of a children's item for an adult price.

Well, no, and that's the reason it's not allowed. Disney doesn't own the San Angel restaurants.

kept skipping over the salad listing,, yup could do that ( love anchovies).. $10 for salad ? **sigh*

we are taking newbies to the world, and I think San Angel is just a beautiful restaurant... (too bad I don't like the food)
we are going to garden grill for dinner.. & don't want to eat BIG at lunch anyway

well that IS interesting.
is there a list somewhere that lists what IS & IS not a diz owned restaurant?
I don't know if there's an exact list, but EPCOT is the main park that has non-Disney owned restaurants (I know Mexico, Italy, and Japan aren't Disney owned, but I couldn't tell you off the top of my head about the other world showcase.) and then of course the Rainforest Cafe at AK is not Disney owned. Similarly Disney Springs is mostly not Disney owned. Most resort restaurants are (I know Coronado used to be an exception but I'm not sure if that's still true or not).

Isn't $10 for a Caesar salad about what you would pay anywhere?
I'd suggest asking the server, they might make an exception for one person at the table. I imagine they are trying to avoid people taking up a table for the atmosphere and not ordering full dinners.

The third party restaurants (not owned by Disney) that I can think of include:
-In Epcot: The restaurants in Mexico, France, Morocco, Italy, Japan, China
-The restaurants at the Swan & Dolphin, Shades of Green, Coronado Springs Resort
-At AK: Rainforest, Yak & Yeti, Tiffins
-At Disney Springs: All of the TS and any walk up windows associated with the TS, although I am not sure about Splitsville or AMC Dine In. Some CS/snack places (e.g. Earl of Sandwich, Wolfgang Puck Express, Blaze Pizza, Sprinkles, Ghirardelli, Starbucks), but I know I am forgetting some.
-Boardwalk: Big River Grill

These are the ones I can think of, but there are probably others, especially at Disney Springs.

We had good success with this with desserts. Fruit is often offered on the kid's menu but not the adult menu, so we'd order an adult dessert for me and fruit for the kiddo and then swap. (Although bonus points to Cef's De France for a *gorgeous* bowl of mixed berries they made me.)

I can't have dairy so I've definitely been offered fruit as a dessert (almost to the point of annoyance) but also isn't a fruit plate suppose to be one of the dessert substitutes on the dining plan now.

My experience was that that was a "sometimes" thing.
