Another tax question for the experts

While doing my 2010 taxes, I realized that I made a mistake on my state taxes last year (2009). On the line that says to enter your "Federal adjusted gross income from line..." I transposed some numbers. The numbers that I entered are higher than they should have been by a little under $6,000. :headache:

We paid the state $169 last year. I re-ran the tax form using the correct numbers and we should have gotten a $10 refund instead. It's a $179 difference but I'm willing to chalk it up as a loss since it was my mistake.

So my question is, do we have to file an amended return? I really don't want to draw attention to the return for an audit by correcting it, but by the same token, if they compare the return to our Federal, the numbers aren't going to match.

File an IL-1040-X. It is designed to correct errors on previously filed returns. The form is very easy to fill out and filing an amended return will not trigger an audit. And, anyway, as long as you have documentation for the return an audit is not a problem.
