Anyway, there were sports magazines, hunting and fishing magazines, gun magazines, high glamour type magazines, Readymade magazine, etc. It was a total mix of genres. (A friend's sister subscribes to a lot of magazines, and we pass them around.)

I don't think ads make a teen smoke, but there must be some effect, or the tobacco companies wouldn't spend so much on advertising.

The Surgeon-General warning came out in 1964. I think anyone who smoked after 1964 can't complain, whine, or gripe at all if they suffer any ill effects as the result of tobacco use. They made their choice to use tobacco, and they have to live with that choice. Sucks to get cancer, emphysema, etc, but it's their own fault.

I know that's cruel, but everyone knows there are bad things, such as disease and death, associated with tobacco use.

I agree, and if people do start smoking because of something that a celeb does, then maybe the government should outlaw stupidity.

Amen! Sink them all! I blame the tobacco companies for the death of my husband at the age of 38 from a massive heart attack. A two-pack a day smoker for years.

I think this is a waste of time honestly.

I would never blame tobacco companies for any health issues that others have had to deal with anymore. People know what the risks are and if they want to take that risk then so be it.

I do not think I know anyone who smokes because of an actor or an ad they see. To claim this is true is very much an insult IMO.

I hate smoking but I think we have bigger things to worry about than something as petty as this.

But I'm not blaming any entity (well, except maybe my parents for getting married and having me at an age which put their 25th anniversary at an impressionable stage for me so that when one of the neighbors at the party asked me to bring a piece of cake to her daughter babysitting next door and the daughter offered me my first cigarette... ) But really, I know the dangers, I accept the dangers, and I'm aware it's - addiction aside - my choice to continue smoking.
