Do you have to let a 10-year-old have sign out privleges? Our son is a high functioning autistic and NO WAY would I want him to be able to leave the club by himself. I know at one time I heard they had to be allowed and then I heard they didn't. Any current update?

We first cruised DCL in 2001 with our ds who was 13 with Down Syndrome. I didn't want him in CG because of the sign in/out issue. I called DCL and spoke with a special needs/medical coordinator before we boarded. They said he could go to Oceaneers which at that time we had the option to sign in/out. She also had me fill out an information sheet. The councelors at the OL were very understanding when I signed him up. We didn't use the lab much because ds prefered the pools and family things. It is 100% your choice whether a 10 yo has sign out privileges. (A 13 yo would regularly have been in a different program.) No worries!

ps: DCL never "made" you let the 10 yo's sign out. There were parents on this board who felt pressured to allow it, but it was never a DCL requirement.

Thanks for the clarification. I can start planning with a happy heart!;) I never was one to bow to peer pressure and I'm not about to start now! Of course I've seen plenty of 10-year-olds who are capable of handling themselves. If I allowed it we'd be asked to leave the ship at the next port because of what DS had gotten into.

We have to raise our children our way, Shelly - and sometimes that seems to be cruel or unreasonable to others. But I want Michael to know that he will have a right to do something when he is old enough to realize the responsibility that comes with it.

Maybe when he's 30, I'll let him have sign in privileges...haahahaha!!!
