Another Sat/Nav GPS Question!

Thinking of buying a portable sat/nav for our next trip to the states and far too mean to hire one for 20 days from Dollar !!!

Looks like the Tom Tom 910 comes preloaded with US, Europe and UK maps, this costs around £300. Does anybody know if there are any cheaper alternatives, I'm sure I've read somewhere that certain models enable you to download the appropriate maps.

Any experts out there?

You can download maps from Tomtom for your system.
I have a phone/pda/gps/camera err.... phone, which has Tomtom on it and I have all the maps on a dvd. When I vist a particular area, I download the maps onto the phones Mini sd card. Works great.

have a look at the Ipaq's, the Palms etc for example. For the same price as Tomtom 910, you get a pda, a tri band/quad band phone and Tomtom

I think that some of the phone companies such as T mobile etc have them as a standard phone you can get with them (mine was unlocked and just put your sim card in)

saves you carrying round two items and you can't forget it in the car

Hi,
I've got a Tomtom 910. Not used it yet in the USA but I'm pleased with it's performance in this country. It's also got bluetooth so it's good for hands free use too. It has it's own hardrive and comes preloaded with UK,USA and European maps. Got fixed speed camera warnings too.

I've got a TomTom 910 too

Upgraded it from a 700 when the original was stolen

I haven't used the 910 anywhere other than the UK yet but did notice that the extra maps, for the US, worked out at around £99 for the 700.
I decided that it was worth paying the extra to upgrade

buy a pda and the tom tom software works out very cheap ... let me know vecause i know a man who can lol
