Woman Finds Bat in Christmas Tree

Updated 7:42 AM ET December 5, 2006

NIPOMO, Calif. (AP) - Sheila Kearns had a Christmas tree delivered to her home on Sunday. She says she thought she'd been pricked by pine needles when she reached into the tree while decorating it. But the next morning, she found a bat hanging upside down in her home.

It turns out that the Christmas tree farm Kearns bought from keeps bats around for pest control and that one unwittingly hitched a ride to her home.

Animal control officials picked up the bat, which tested negative for rabies.

Kearns got a tetanus shot and some antibiotics, but says she's not fazed. She says she'll keep buying her trees from the same farm.

I would of had a heart attack.

OMG!!!!! This would be my worst nightmare!!!!! I have an awful fear, and dislike, of birds and bats!!!! :sad2:

We bought an artificial tree for the first time last year, and I don't think I'll ever go back to the real thing, especially after reading this!!!

AWESOME! I always did want a pet bat! I wish I'd bought that tree.

Okay, so now I'm officially a freak, right? I love bats. :teeth:

I love bats too. They are excellent at pest control, plus they are fuzzy and cute. Buy a bat house and install it in your yard!

I was thinking - How AWESOME! Bats are neat!

Ok bat lovers, have any of you awoken at 2 a.m to a bat flying around your bed room? I have twice and literally almost pee'd my undies I was so freaked out. Thank God dh was home both times. Those critters are just scary and gross.

This would have been a dream come true for DD7. They studied bats the entire month of October, and they're her favorite topic of conversation now.

I know! We have tons of bats around, and they are neat to watch flying madly around at dusk!

We also don't have rabies in my country (strict quaratine rules), so if I got bitten it would be no big deal. I'd probably take antibiotics b/c of leptospirosis risk, but no biggie.

This must be standard curriculum for 2nd graders because my 7 year old daughter has been the same way. She wants to see bats, preferably the vampire variety. So a bat in our tree would have been a real hit with her, too.

Incidentally, for the last three years we've bought real and uncut leland cypress trees for use as a Christmas tree. The most exciting stowaways we get are spiders.

omheck, some people have obviously never watched Salems Lot in the dark on Halloween  :faint:

I have had one run in with a bat in a dark hallway of a building I was convinced was haunted. It was an old TB hospital that was turned into a retirement home (dont ask) I was working there. I had to go and lock up and went into the old part that hadnt been refurbished yet. This thing came screaming at me and trying to kill me! ( I know it wasnt but it sure felt like it when I was a teenager) I was not staying around to figure it out though I ran like a banshee was on my tail.

Yikes, that would be freaky!

I agree that bats are cool though. When I was a child we once had a bat fly into our home through our chimney, on Halloween night!!! My father caught it with his big fishing net and let it go. :)

Ok, was anyone else thinking of "Christmas Vacation" when they read this?? :rotfl2:

Christmas Vacation had a squirrel in the tree! Just as bad though.
