First thank-you to everyone for answering my questions. I believe my best option is going to be the Nikon D50. And I have found a dealer that still has factory new in the box. They have different packages available, which one do you feel is the best, and is ithis a good price the three packages are 749.00
Package #1 Nikon D50 Intermediate's Package (28-105mm) + 70-300mm
#2 Nikon D50 Exclusive Package (18-50mm + 55-200mm) and # 3 Nikon D50 Starter Package (28-200mm). Hopefully this will be the last question on what to purchase and we can move on to how to actually use the camera beyond the scope of PnS. Again thanks to everyone and I love reading about and seeing everyones pictures.

Of those 3 packages, I would go with the 18-55 & 55-200. My preference is the wider angle of the 18mm over the 28mm. If you can, try and get it with the 18-135mm lens. This would do you well for a while. Then down the road you can pick up a 70-300mm lens and a 50mm f/1.8.

If it were me I would go for the #2 package with the 18-55 and the 55-200. That gives you a good range of lens coverage to start with. I use my 18-55 a lot, it is great for closer, wider shots.

noooooo not another Nikon user :)

Of the 3 I would go with what the others are saying... 18-55 and 55-200

Welcome to the Nikon family; prepare to be assimilated...

Like the others, of the packages you list, I'd go with the 18-55 / 55-200 (I'm assuming it is a non-VR), but those would not be my lens choices unless those were the only options. My preference would be for the 18-135, for the extra reach and the 55-200VR, which at $250 is, from all I've seen and read, a stellar lens for the money. You *can* buy a refurb D50, new 18-135mm and new 55-200VR for less than $1K, online, if that is an option for you.

Oh, and my advice and opinions, along with a dollar or so, will still buy you a cup of coffee.
