If you would like to borrow points from the upcoming use year, do you have to first transfer them into the current year and then attempt to get the reservation you want, or when you call for a reservation can you borrow the points at that time, assuming what you wanted to book is available? I am hoping that you can do it when you make the reservation because otherwise, if you can't get the date/resort you want and you have already moved the points then you have to use them in that year, correct?... I hope this is not too confusing. I am about to join, but just want to make sure I understand how this borrowing works because I would be doing it right away to take my parents on vacation. Thanks in advance for any replies!

You can only borrow points when making a reservation in which you will use those points. Be aware though that if you later cancel or modify that reservation, any borrowed points stay in the UY into which they were borrowed. You cannot put them back in their original UY. So just be sure you (and especially any relatives you have invited to join you) really intend to take the trip before you borrow the points!

Lisa is correct about borrowed points remaining in the use year into which they were borrowed in the event of a cancellation. Sometimes, though, even though the borrowed points have to stay in their new use year, you may be able to bank other points from that use year back into the year from which you borrowed points, creating a zero-sum situation.

Can you bank borrowed points?
Will MS work with you in swaping out points already in a ressie? As In the case above?

You cannot bank borrowed points -- that would be exactly the same thing as "unborrowing" them. Banking and borrowing are final transactions -- you cannot "undo" them.

As far as swapping the points, what you really want to do in this situation (modifying a reservation made with both current and borrowed points) is ask MS to free up current-UY points, not borrowed points. Then, provided you are still within the necessary banking window you can bank the current-UY points into the next UY if you have no plans to use them. If you cancel the entire reservation, then you will have to use the borrowed points for another reservation before the end of the UY into which they were borrowed.
