Another observation and experiences post-My turn!

Kygirl-Your trip report was very informative and a great read! I am glad despite the weather and some of the snafus, you were able to enjoy yourself. I can really relate because I'm a dominant Dec/Jan WDW visitor and though we have strayed in the past for April and May visits, I'm super nervous about our upcoming trip in Sept. :sunny: My kids (7, 6, and 3) are not helping my anxiety every time they whine about the heat only 20min into a playground visit, on a 75 degree day! :worried:

I loved reading your report! I agree that AK is HOT! and am a little worried about our August trip. I skipped it the last tiem we were there in the Summer, but with two little animal lovers in tow we are going to get there by RD, and then get teh heck out of Dodge by early aftrnoon...well that is the plan.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and observations!! I enjoyed reading it alot.

Cheers!

Great report! It does sound like you all had a great time. You made the necessary adjustments and I think that is over half the battle - sometimes I think after months and months of planning it is so hard to change the game plan and keep a positive outlook on things.

We took our DD right before she turned 3 and it was one of our most magical trips too (although thankfully for us it was in cooler weather). We have done many summer trips since then and I think the key to managing the summer heat/crowds really is rope drop and late nights with that afternoon pool break. I know it does not work for everyone but as my kids have gotten older it was easier to get them ready in the morning and they had the stamina to last through the evenings plus they always love pool time. Now as those kids are tweens/teens the morning is getting harder again. I think we will just have to sacrifice more park time to keep the whole crew happy - more late nights and more "resort days" where they can sleep in, hang out at the pool, etc.. I think FP+ came along at the right time for us. Sleep in AND get to ride TSMM!

I totally get you on the car thing with younger kids. We drove all the time until our kids were much older. We find the busses to be easier now but I am a big proponent or driving to the parks with kids under 5-6 years old.

I don't know if this will make you feel better or not. We did a May trip in 2003 (the 7th to the 10th or so - it was cut short so I remember it well!). The heat was absolutely unbearable. High 90s. High 90% humidity. Even at night, walking outside was like walking in a sauna with a wet washcloth on your face. The forecast (we were supposed to be there for 10 days) was the same for the next two weeks! Since then, we've been to Disney in June and August many times. I have never experienced heat like that for more than a day on those trips. So I laugh when people post responses to questions about August with stories of heat. (We did late august for probably 5 years in a row from maybe 2006 to 2011.) Honestly, I agree with your name for AK. It was absolutely miserable. And we were there with a local friend. Even she was complaining.

Thanks for your insights. We will also be traveling for the first time with our almost 3 year old later this year, so this was very helpful. I am still debating a car rental, but I can't seem to find anything for less than $300 for the week, and that's for a car that probably won't even hold all of our luggage, the stroller, etc.

We also hope to get a king bed at Pop. I was wondering if you could share more info on the storage solutions you utilized in the room?

Great trip report (except for the part where you became a racist ;))

Yeah, we've found that anytime from the end of April right through November can have sweltering heat.

"It was hot. We were cranky. Many CMS seemed cranky. We rode IASW and the Barnstormer 10 times each. We had three terrible counter service lunches. My two year laughed and smiled and the whole place seemed magical."

That right there is perhaps the greatest description of the MK I have ever read. LOL

I was going to quote everybody and reply to you all but instead I'll say thank for the kind responses from most of you! And comments on the heat as we thought it was epic. Maybe we're just weak but I don't know. It gets that hot in Kentucky but not until later in the summer. We've been to Disney twice before in May and it was upper 80s both times so it wasn't like we were expecting balmy 70s or anything. This steamy swelter was just not what I had my head wrapped around. I was of course stalking the 10 day forecast as early as possible and it was spot on. But by then it was too late to do anything about it so we just had to soldier on, squirt bottle in tow.
I can't believe this is actually a thing. :scared1: Rapunzel's friends must have some good stories to tell.

I don't know how much of a thing it normally is but it was what the maybe twentyish girl in front of us did. Rapunzel was our first princess so we'd spent months talking this up to DD. It was just one of those moments for us. But it passed quickly and DD was starry eyed once we got our turn.

I don't know if I'd pay to rent a car just to drive to the parks because I'm such a cheapskate so that's a tough call, unless you had plans off property too. The buses are kind of our personal nightmare but it would be a way more difficult decision if we didn't already have our own car. I don't know. My DH would say yes because he HATES the buses most of all. But he's generally the stroller/back pack wrangler so it might have something to do with that.

The set up in our room was something I was really proud of! I wish I'd taken pictures. And most of these ideas I got from the Dis so thanks to everybody! Again, we were able to pull a lot of this off because we drove instead of flying so we weren't limited on the amount of junk we had with us. In the past, I have hated the mess that accumulates over a week in a hotel room so I was an enforcer making sure everything got back in it's place all week.

Anyway, on the side of the bathroom door facing the sink, I hung one of those shoe rack things for toiletries, sunscreen, meds, anything like that and it was a lifesaver. It kept all that junk easily accessible instead of in a bag but it was OFF the sink top. I got one of those things you hang from a closet rail to sort of make shelves and this gave us TONS of room for socks, underwear, t shirts and all of DD's clothes. There are only 3 small drawers in the dresser in the room so this totally saved us. I hung it all the way over on the end of the close by the safe. Next to that I had a pop up laundry hamper. Also AWESOME for keeping dirty clothes from being in a random pile somewhere. We used the rest of the closet for the few hanging things we had and there were plenty of hangers for us, although I had been prepared to ask for more if necessary. On the shelf above the hanging bar, we had a diaper box and three of those closet maid square bin things. In one of them, I had dishes (sippy cups, emergency nap pacis, cereal bowls, etc.). The second was kind of house keeping stuff (Lysol wipes, a Ziploc full of clothespins that came in handy, boxes of large and small ziplocs, grocery bags for poopy dipes, papertowels etc.) The third bin was for the stuff I needed to replenish our park backpack each day (gum, glow sticks, hand sanitizer, etc.). There was just enough room for those items and a few other small things to be stashed up there. On the counter next to the sink, I brought a small dollar store plastic tub with holes in the sides for dirty dishes and then I used that when I washed. I filled the sink with dish soapy water, washed, and moved everything to the tub, then emptied the sink and rinsed the dishes and tub. I had some cheapo dish towels that could hang on the edge of that tub when not in use. We also brought a small foldable stool so DD could wash her hands by herself. DH thought that was crazy but it was so worth it. Also a help was a small plug in night light for right by the sink for nighttime. In the two small cubbies in the "dresser" I used one for a diaper changing supply area (we are having some potty training issues so our doctor recommended we give her a break on the trip) and the other for swim stuff (towels, suits, floaties) after it had time to dry. One of the cubbies in one bedside table was filled with our snacks and breakfast stuff that didn't need the fridge and the other cubby was for the few toys and books that we brought along. I brought a power strip and plugged it in by the small table so our electronics tended to accumulate there but since it wasn't covered with too much other junk, this was okay. We rented a stroller from Kingdom Strollers (highly recommended!) and because of the king bed, there was plenty of room to park it in front of the window. Also, I brought a Minnie dress up magnet kit and DD could play with it on the back of the door while we were getting ready or otherwise busy. I'm not sure why but this really kept her entertained.

That's probably way more detail than you wanted but I was pretty proud of it. It was my opus. And it really made our week at Pop go much more smoothly.

I was there the same time as you Kygirl and we're thinking about going in Feb or early April due to the heat. I'm never going back in May or summer.

Thanks for the report. We had similar experiences with rudeness in October. The FP situation was very similar. Don't you wish they had the old kiosks with a mb reader that would spit out a time like the good old days. You only got the rides you wanted or needed rather than picking a fp for
philharmagic or whatever was left just because and then hem and haw over whether you want that or not.

I was going to compliment you on your trip report, which I loved reading, but now I'm just in awe of your organized hotel room! I believe you perfected the art of organizing those tiny hotel rooms--and the folding stool--genius! I wish we had thought of that for our August trip. I was constantly lifting up my five-year-old and two-year-old so they could wash their hands or brush their teeth.

Of course you are also completely right about it being so hot in Animal Kingdom as well as the need to cover the bus stops at the value resorts. I have to say, though, you really need to give rope drop a try :) There's nothing quite like that first magical hour of the morning in a park.

I was actually thinking that I wish they had an "express line" like at the grocery store. Like most of the kiosks could be for whoever like they are now but one or two on the end actually had a time limit. If you weren't done in a minute and a half or something like that you were shuffled to one of the kiosks surrounded by huge groups asking the CMs all the questions.

I understand that this problem probably stems from the fact that most people just aren't as familiar with the parks as repeat visitors are but it seems like it would make it fair for both parties if they would carve that out. Again, just like not expecting the people with a small basket to stand behind the huge carts at the grocery. But then you start thinking about the poor CM who would have to enforce the time limit and realize that would never fly either! Wishful thinking I guess.

Thank you for the room detail! I'm going to try to incorporate as much as is feasible with our packing limits. That stool idea is great, but I don't think it would fit in my suitcase lol! Might do it when we go to Sesame Place this summer though.

I think the worst thing these poor families can do is arrive around 10 or 11am. I know it has changed for us now that we have APs, but honestly, I was with a family who had never been ever before. When I told them the night before, we never go before 3 or 4 (usually later if we go after work) pm (unless we have ONE hop day that's IT with a friend, or have a very very good reason.) They all looked at me like I was from the looney bin. The next day, guess what? The person they came with got there at 3 anyway. We ended up riding the tram in together. And they proceeded to sweat and carry these babies around all day and all you could tell was that the Dad probably hated every minute of it. They look at us and say "you do this every week?" To which I said "Well remember, most times we don't come in til 4 or even later..." and then it clicked. See, those of you who feel inclined to beat down the door and then sweat in the heat of the day usually don't make it to night time. Night time is my FAVORITE time in the parks! (I mean, if I can't have sunrise, which normally I can't.) That evening time when the sun starts to go and the sky turns gorgeous and as the lights turn on, and then the parks look AMAZING and you are running to this ride and that ride, and then its Celebrate the Magic, and then Wishes, and then more rides, wow! I just feel bad! Most of the families wear themselves out at the worst possible time, 1-3 is the busiest. Frankly, if I was a parent (admittedly am not, but I do get hot too!) I would recommend either a water park, or just sleep in, catch the pool or some shade and then shower up and go after 3. Get some FPs for 4-8 or something. You will enjoy your vacation soooo much more. If all you have is one day, then be smart about it. Utilize things like Philharmagic in dark cool theaters, or the shows. (I hit the Ice show at Busch Gardens at 1:30, what a splendid idea, and also the show that FotLK wishes it was!) Speaking of which, AK definitely I agree feels like the African sun. We just simply don't really go unless we have an evening FP for Safari and Everest. Even the day my friend and I started at 9 there (she only had two day hoppers at the time, and ended up getting an AP anyway!), it was sweltering before we got into the parks! Safari, Everest, FotLK, maybe a Primevil Whirl and Dinosaur if it's open. Bugs Life isn't bad if it's hot. Otherwise, this park is a giant construction zone with little tiny walk ways of construction walls to funnel masses of people through. I wouldn't spend much time in it until its over. Half a day tops....

Anyway people, don't sacrifice the night life here just because you feel like you are obligated to get here and spend every minute cooking in the Florida sun. Or do some RD one or two days and then take the afternoons off. Come back at 4. There is a reason alot of other cultures have a Siesta.

I finally saw FoF Parade this week for the first time ever. It was fun. But 3pm and no shade there in the Main St circle? I think Disney finds torture fun...

And where was that? I didn't see it.

ETA: Or does the smiley mean you were joking?

The first paragraph under "Other Guests," I'm sure. People are considered rude because of their actions, not because of their country of origin or their native language, so that kind of thing doesn't really need to be mentioned.

Yes, the fact that we were driving our car definitely made it easier for me to bring all that stuff with us. My husband wanted to kill me when we were packing the car and then dragging it to the room but it was all worth it in the end. It was such a help on our trip though that if we were going to fly (which we would probably never do!) I would consider maybe ordering at least some of those items on Amazon and having them delivered to the hotel or something. I think I read before that you can do that. I didn't really look into it because I didn't need to. The stool I brought was one we had but it was just like this and made a HUGE difference all week.
http://www.amazon.com/Home--Folding...2146268&sr=8-7&keywords=folding+kitchen+stool

It would be worth the $10 to use it for a week and then pass it off to an unsuspecting stranger with the right sized kiddos.

Oh My KyGirl........that hotel room organization is AMAZING!!!! I enjoyed trying to picture it all!!!! Loved your report!!
