I just want to make sure that I have what I can do straight before I attempt to make my next reservation by myself online.

My use year is October and my next reservation is for November 12. I still have points from this use year (Oct 11). Do I need to bank my Oct 11 points before I make the Nov 12 reservation? When I make the Nov 12 reservation, will I be borrowing from Oct 12, since I am making the reservation now?

and then, at my 7 month window, will I need to cancel my reservation at my home resort before attempting to make a new reservation at an alternate resort? I'm thinking so to free up the points to be able to use them.

If you have points in your current UY and want to use them for a reservation that takes place in your next UY, yes you need to bank them prior to making the reservation.

Point usage is determined by the dates of the stay, not the date you make the reservation.

Also, if you need more points to make the reservation in addition to using your '11 UY banked points, you won't be borrowing '12 UY points because the trip takes place in your '12 UY. As PP mentioned, what matters is when the trip takes place, not when you are calling to make the reservation.

And yes, if you want to change resorts at 7 months, your first reservation will be cancelled so those points can be used for the new reservation. This is best done by calling, so the CM can hold the room at the new resort (if it available) before cancelling the existing reservation.
