Another neighbor vent

We get along pretty well with our next door neighbor but I know that my DH will be a little upset when he gets home from work today.

The neighbors are having a new roof put on today. The workers have parked some of the trucks in the street in front and on the side of our house (we live on a corner). No problem with that but they have tons of tools and supplies in the grass parkway between the street and the sidewalk. DH is very proud of his lawn. He works hard to keep it green, lush, weed-free...He spent 2 weekends hand dethatching the grass and a fortune on Kentucky Blue Grass seed. He won't be happy when he comes home and sees the mess or the grass that has been crushed. I did ask them if they could move it off but apparently the workers don't speak English. Our neighbors aren't home so I can't talk to them. The guy that owns the company lives up the street but we don't know them. I know that technically it's not our property but we do have to take care of it.

With everything that is going on at DH's work (that 's a long story that I've vented about before), I think that he may react a little more than he would normally.

Hmmmm....well, grass is not white carpet and it's meant to be walked on. I think as long as they are not driving trucks up on your lawn (and creating ruts), the grass will be okay.

I realize it's your husband's pride and joy but I don't think that should get in the way of people just trying to do a day's work (so long as they are not being careless and destroying your property).

It doesn't matter that you don't know the guy who owns the company. Call him and politely ask that his crew remove their stuff from YOUR lawn.

Isn't that the easement anyways? "Technically", it's not YOUR yard anyways, but I get it, as my DH is crazy about his yard also!

If it were me, I'd pretend I didn't see it and hope they were gone before my DH got home. I WOULDN'T make their job more difficult by having them move their tools from the easement to the yard. I WOULD take a hose to the area when they left, and give the area a once over.

Hopefully you don't ever have sewer problems! (This is what I tell my DH when he gets a little too crazy about the grass.)

The grass will recover in a day or two AT MOST probably within hours. Like another poster said, if they are driving/parking on it that is different, but just laying down some tools nothing to get upset over.

I would ignore this. I understand that your DH is proud of the lawn an dworks hard to keep it nice but I would not chance eroding a good relationship with a neighbor over grass. The grass will spring up in a day or two but repairing a friendship takes a lot longer.

ITA and you may be needing a new roof (or some maintenance) on your home (in the near future) and find that the contractors may need to put their tools on the grass 'parkway' and you don't want your neighbors who you seem to have a good relationship, getting all upset about it.

Grass will grow back.

ITA. Maybe at the end of the day when the workers leave, there won't be any sign that they were there. Don't unnecessarily upset DH or ruin a good relationship with your neighbors.

I think what the OP was trying to get across is that her DH just spent a lot of time prepping the lawn, including that area, & has new grass sprouting there. That's a little different in my book. Even just the tools & workers walking back & forth are probably destroying the new shoots.

IMO in that scenario it doesn't matter what language the workers speak, it's common sense to me that they suck up a little inconvenience not to destroy someone else's efforts to maintain things.

I wouldn't get up set over it, but if I put as much time and effort into my yard as the op's husband, I can understand being irritated by it, whether it's my own yard, or that little section of grass in front of my yard that belongs to the city.

It's grass ~ that can be easily replaced/replanted.

The good news is that grass that's really well maintained will probably spring back very well. Remind your DH of that (another benefit of his hard work!). I wouldn't expend any worry on it.

I understand that the land doesn't belong to us but we are responsible to maintain it. DH takes a lot of pride in his lawn. It must be a guy thing.

In the grand scheme of things, the $100+ that we just spent on grass seed isn't the end of the world. I just know that he will notice the crushed baby grass when he goes out to water it tonight.

I would try Google translator but I have no idea what language they're speaking. Russian? Polish? Really, I'm joking. I wouldn't go that far.

We had our roof, siding and windows replaced a few years ago. It was early spring and things hadn't sprouted yet. Every night, the workers went around our yard, driveway and street with giant magnets to pick up stray nails. I'm hoping this company does the same.


We're not going to ruin what is a good relationship with our neighbors over this.

It's just nice to have a place like the Dis to vent.

Go ask them to move the stuff again. If they won't, then all you can do is be mad about it. Then you can:
1. Tell your husband how you tried so hard to defend his grass.
2. Fuss about it with your husband over a beer on the porch.
3. Have a full blown conversation about how workers should be able to speak English.
4. Tell your neighbors they hired some real pieces of work to do their roof.
5. Go to bed a hero because you tried to save your husband's grass.
