Hey everyone...

A while back I asked a few questions about NC, and now I have just a few more (and that's it, I promise!!)

It seems that there is a good chance I will be moving to North Carolina in a few months. I've been looking on just about every real estate website, etc. I can find trying to look up towns to live in, but I think I need the help of locals! Does anyone know any nice places to live that are within half an hour (or about that) of Greensboro? Also, I've heard some not-so-great things about Greensoboro... is it all bad? Do they get a lot of tornadoes there?

Any info on the area would be much appreciated. This wole moving business is driving me nuts!! :upsidedow

I'm in Burlington, about 20-25 min. east of Burlington. Our town in really booming. We're caught in the middle of Greensboro, High Point (Furniture Mkt), Winston-Salem to the west and Raleigh, Durham, Research Triangle Park (RTP) to the east of us.

We do not get alot of tornados but do get watches for them quite often. We do not get a whole lot of snow but will get ice. It is hot & humid in the summer. Winters are pretty mild.

I don't know much about Greensboro - for living. They have nice shopping & restaurants though. I know that there are some rough areas and some really nice areas - just like most towns.

In our area, new homes go for around $115+ per square foot.

Now, for the more important stuff. We're 3-4 hours from beaches and 10 hours from WDW.:)

I hope this helps some.

Hehehe...no tornadoes. I live in Mocskville which is 45 minutes west of Greensboro. Nice airport in G'boro but I wouldnt' want to live in Guilford County especially if I had kids. Terrible school district (and the HS recently burnt down). Parts of Winston-Salem are really ncie and HIgh POint has great places too (but I think that may be Guilford County). I'd check out the suburbs of Winston-Salem and stick with Forsyth or Davidson Counties. Although I LOVE Davie COunty where I live, but it's a bit far I guess. If you want to check out Davie COunty, let me know and I can hook you up with a terrific Real Estate Agent.

Oh and Mocksville is only 8 hours from Disney!!

I live in Randolph county, 15 minutes from Greensboro. Yeah... its nice to be close to GSO, but wouldn't want to live there. Jennasis recommends Davie county; I agree that its a great place to live. Definitely more of a "country" vibe there than you get here in my corner of Randolph county (I lived in Davie county for 4 years and may well retire there someday). If schools matter, this county's schools seem to have a better reputation than some surrounding counties. I overhear people say that as they are moving locally they want to be sure to avoid countues X Y and Z, but to be sure to stay in Randolph county. I live in Trinity, a little town that is right between High Point and Thomasville. Nice little place that recently incorporated. has lowest tax rate in the state, is trying to figure out how to develop sensibly, and is attracting lots of newcomers because of its easy access to I-85 and proximity to GSO, Raleigh, and Charlotte (I can be in Raleigh or Charlotte in an hour).

Oh, and Jenassis says 8 hours from Davie county to WDW?! :scared1: I would be sacred to ride with you! ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.. I will keep everything in mind that you've all said. My mother and I are just a tad confused considering that we've never even been there yet!!

Making the decision on where to move was so hard that I applied to schools in areas we were considering and if I got in, it was still on the table! Luckily for me UNC Greensboro is one of the schools I got into.

A young woman in my church is a freshman at UNCG this year. She lived on campus, but next year will live in newly constructed townhomes that aree close to campus. She and her parents agree that this is a great set up for her. I forgot the name of the place, but may be ble to get more info.

Greensboro is a really nice town to live in. Like all the others I'm aware of, there are good and not-so-good parts of town. The school system is spotty, but there are some good schools if you do a little research. And "the high school" that burnt down was one of at least 10 high schools in the system - don't think we only have the one high school!!!

Now Guilford County does have some issues, but so do all of the surrounding counties. If you ask someone from one of the more rural counties, they'll usually say that the bigger cities, like Greensboro, Winston, High Point, Burlington, etc are "nice but they wouldn't want to live there." Of course, ask any of the city people and they'll say the same thing about the rural areas!!!

Overall, I'd say it depends on where you live and what you are after. UNC-G is a great school - I hope you'll be happy there!!!

I grew up near Greensboro, in a small town called Reidsville. Not much there, and about 40 mins north of Gso on the VA line. We spent a lot of time in Greensboro, and it had definitely gotten better in the last few years. Downtown has been re-vamped, and there is never a lack of something to do. Dining, shopping, outdoor activities...lots of choices. Greensboro also has a decent water park, and is within a decent drive to Asheboro, which has an awesome zoo. You might want to also look into Kernersville, it's between Greensboro and Winston. Greensboro, unfortunatly, as another poster said, is not known for it's school systems. (or it's traffic). Burlington and High Point are also popular which are nearby. In the 21 years I lived there, I saw lots of warnings, but no real tornados. Good luck :)

Good luck on your move. Maybe one day my girls and I will join you. I have always wanted to move to NC. Just today I was looking at jobs and apartments. One day I will move there

I live in Kernersville, NC - been here about 8 years. The weather is GREAT!! Granted I grew up in Tallahassee, FL so the "hot & humid" summers we have here are much more tollerable to me than those in FL. Kernersville is a small town, but is rapidly growing. It is about 15 minutes from Winston-Salem, 15 minutes to Greensboro and 15 minutes to High Point - we are right in the middle. My neighbors (2) daughters both attend UNGC and have problem with the commute.

If you come, I hope you like it!

Oh, I have heard that Disney is about 9-1/2 - 10 hours away. I will let you know in October!!!!

Also wanted to add that GSO built a new baseball stadium for its minor league team a couple of years ago. It is a lot of fun to go, even if you aren't that much of a fan. It's right downtown, where it should be

My best friend from college lives in Trinity. It is a small world.

Amen to that! Aren't you glad that fuss is over?

PS - The drive to WDW is about 10 1/2 hours, with 2 or 3 short stops. I take 220 through Rockingham to 95 near Florence, SC. It's a nice drive - one I'll be doing in a couple of weeks!
