Does anyone know another name for a Chinese Auction. Our school is having one and we can't call it Chinese Auction because it is no longer politically correct. Thanks! For those that don't call it chinese auction it is the auction wher eyou have a bunch of prizes and bags in front and you put a ticket in each bag that you want a chance at winning something....

My kid's elementary school always had one as a fund raiser in the spring.....hence the name "Spring Fling".....

I have heard them called "tricky tray" also

We call them lucky number auctions since the lucky number get drawn to win.

I go to the Zonta Clubs auction every year and it is called the Lucky Number dinner.

When DS was in private school we called it the "Chance Room". The chance room had the tickets that you dropped in the bags, then we had a luncheon with a fashion show and separate silent auction where people wrote their bids on bid sheets for each item. The kids loved the chance room because most of those items were more kid friendly and they could choose which items to try for. The luncheon wasn't a kid oriented thing - it was strictly moms & grandmas.

We sold the tickets for $1 each, and the items for the chance room were valued at less than $50. Items higher than $50 value went in the regular silent auction with a minimum opening bid of 25% of the item value.

They're also known as Theme Tray Auctions here.

I've heard them referred to as silent auctions and penny sales.

We also call them "Tricky Trays". Good luck with your planning and good for you for being PC.

That is a totally different auction here...that is one where you have an item and then a clip board in front of it and you write in your bids, someone else comes behind you and writes in a higher one then they getthe prize...I thought silent auction but I was afraid it would confuse people with the other type silent auction.

Our "Chinese Auction" is now called the Gift Auction. I agree that the silent auction is a bit different. I like those silent ones, at least you have a chance to outbid if you really want something.

Have fun!

Well, a big

on political correctness in general here, but if you need to change the name, wikipedia does say that "chance auction" is another name for Chinese auction.

FWIW, the wikipedia article and another I found on everything2.com don't make any reference to the term being politically incorrect but do question whether the term has any origin from China.
