Time will tell whether this was an automation/sensor issue or a mechanical problem with the tow rig.

The big concern would be if the automation system is at fault. I wonder if the insurance companies could be assuaged enough to not worry.

If this automation system worked like it was supposed to it would be fully running by now. This integration of the automation has taken much longer than they have wanted and is really only on a few trains at this time because they can't get it past that testing phase.

Other than a road closure to make sure everything was ok there were no impacts to guests. The automation system was supposed to be completely rolled out by now but has had numerous issues due to the age of the trains and only a couple monorails have actually tested the automation system.

Sounds like PTC for the railroads that the govt is trying to force down their throats. It's complex, very expensive, and the time frames for it's implementation are unreasonable.

From what I understand, the engine components are not in the cone sections of the train, but rather underneath the passenger cars.

They can have a replacement nose in a short time. Not like they haven't done body work to a train before (Think Teal). I'll bet it's not out of service for more than a couple of weeks.

Engines are under the passenger areas in the middle of the trains. The fronts just house the pilot and computer systems. Unfortunately from what I've been told it's more than cosmetic. I'm assuming structural damage as well.

I'd like to point out that this isn't the first time a train has had a collision with a tow. In the 90s red had nose damage from a similar problem.

Parts were still available from bombardier then. Plus you didn't have every gov. Safety agency breathing down there neck back then. Everything built anymore has to be contracted and evaluated before it even sees daylight.

As I understand it...that system is so far off the production line that the manufacturers (bombardier) aren't really willing to appease unless it's for a kings ransom.

It's a horribly out of date system. When things get to this point...engineers think "upgrade" not..."what's the cheapest way to make sure this puppy moves 10 mil tourists to the parking lot next year?

Or perhaps I am mistaken?

I'm sure the imagineers are thinking upgrade but Disney execs think otherwise.

Can we do this with drones somehow? It's really just a scale-up of Amazon's package delivery problem.

Or turn the entire internal transportation quandary over to Uber ... "we have an app that defies the laws of transportation economics."
