Trying to figure out costumes for the party...

First, we were going to surprise the kids with the party and pack costumes for them without them knowing. DH wanted to do Star Wars themed costumes for all of us.

Then, I was looking at all of the pictures online and so many girls have princess costumes on, which made me think that my DD, who is not really into Star Wars, might not be too keen on being Princess Leia at Disney.

SO, I think we are still going to try to surprise them with the party, but tell them they can pick out costumes to wear on Halloween "for fun".

I'm having costume selection anxiety... I think it would be fun for us to match, but then we all have to agree on something. DH suggested the Scooby Doo gang, I suggested the Incredibles (would be super easy). Then I was thinking, do we really need to dress up? Maybe the kids should just dress up and be whatever they want? Do many of the parents dress up? Or is just mainly the kids? Does everyone really go all out with costumes or are there some really simple costumes? I am just not sure what to expect...

Help! lol!

You'll see a wide range of costumes at the party, and many people not wearing costumes. You'll see groups and couples in themed costumes - from the elaborate hand-made to store-bought. Some are super creative! Some groups will wearing matching t-shirts or simple costumes they made.

We surprised our kids with a trip to MNSSHP last year and I just took the costumes from the prior year: our oldest was a Jedi, our youngest was Peter Pan. I wanted to dress up, too, but not over-the-top, and I had a friend who had made a red/white polka-dotted skirt to be Minnie Mouse at a costume party another year, so I borrowed her skirt, wore some black exercise shorts underneath, a black top, red/black Mickey Crocs, and bought some new Minnie ears from the gift shop. My husband wore shorts and a Capt America t-shirt.

It is fun to dress up, but if you don't, you certainly won't be the only ones. I would let the kids pick and I wouldn't worry about it for you and your husband.

I would say that the parties we went to about 40-50% of adults had costumes. The rest it was just the kids. We always allowed the kids (one year DD did BBB and was Tiana) to choose a costume. It's always fun to see groups dressed in a specific theme, but I suggest not stressing. Ask the kids what they want to dress as (without telling the secret they are going to the party). If you can fit a group theme to what they want then go for it. If not, just let everyone dress in whatever costume they wish.

A suggestion is to dress as pirates/mermaids. You could make an appointment for the pirate makeover and kill 2 birds with one stone. Just a thought.:rolleyes1

Have fun! We love MNSSHP.

I've wanted to do a Wizard of Oz theme for Halloween since we had #4:
DH - scarecrow
Me - wicked witch
ODS - tin man
ODD - dorothy
YDS - cowardly lion
YDD - glinda
Black Mini Schnauzer - toto

ODS and ODD won't agree. :confused3 I let my kids pick out and order costumes early because we are surprising them with 2 days at WDW and MNNSHP in a few weeks. ODS is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and ODD picked Jasmine (different princess each year). I ordered some costumes for me to try, but I may not dress up after all. I'm not sure I want to wear a costume in FL heat. I would just let everyone choose their own costume because someone will be upset in the group.

Me and my mom went to MNSSHP last year and dressed up, me as Puss in Boots and my mom as the Fairy Godmother. We had an AMAZING time! My thoughts on adults dressing up is that, if you are going to MNSSHP, you are attending a HALLOWEEN party, and dressing up makes the party that much more enjoyable! I found that the more effort you put into your costumes, the more praise and compliments you get throughout the night (and maybe even people will ask to take photos with you!) Then again, I could be considered one of those crazy people who like to go "all out" in terms of dressing up, but I assure you that if you do decide to dress up, you will be given lots of attention (enough to fill one's ego... :lovestruc)

I would have felt out of place not being dressed up.

Themed family groups are always cool to see at the park, but it's much easier said than done to pick a theme and make everyone happy. (Believe me, this year we are taking my nine-year-old nephew with, and our group consists of me reusing my Puss in Boots costume, my mom as a doctor, and my nephew as Spyro the Dragon.) So, I suggest that if the plan of an entire family theme doesn't work out, just dress up in something that you find cool (and I mean that in both terms of interest and weather!) and let the kids pick out their own costumes. Either way, you will have a great time! Oh, and the costumes don't have to be Disney themed. I chose to dress up as something non-Disney because it was unique (and I'm just one of those people that doesn't want to be seen in the same costume as someone else... :cool2:)

I hope that whatever you decide, don't be put off from wearing a costume just because you are an adult. After all, how many chances do you get to dress up at Disney World? I hope that you and your family have an AMAZING time at MNSSHP!!!

This year we are surprising my son and were finally able to schedule our trip at the same time as his favorite cousins are going. I have made "apron" type costumes (easy on/off, light and still cam do rides) for wife and cousin, they are going as Cinderella's Ugly Stepsisters. My daughter is going as Lilo, and I am going simple and easy as Russell from 'Up'. And am in the process of making the 3 boys (the cousins) costumes, they will be the Hitchhiking Ghosts from HM! The last time we did MNSSHP, only my son dressed up.

OKay, just wanted to circle back and let you know what we decided...

We are going as the Incredibles! Can't wait... so excited!

If you see us there on Halloween, say "HI!" :D

How fun! What great ideas! :)

We live in New England where halloween is usually cold and damp so our costumes are always cozy and warm. Now that we are headed to Disney in a few days, I had to choose nice lightweight things for my kids.
DS 7 is going to be Peter Pan
DS 5 is a pirate
DD 3 is Minnie Mouse

I don't think DD 13 wants to dress up and neither do DH and I.

I wanted my kids to all match but then I figured, they're the ones who have to wear it...let them be happy. If I don't want to wear a costume, why should I make them wear something they don't want to wear.

DH, DD, my sis, bil, 2 nieces and I went as a bag of m&ms. We all wore khaki shorts (because we all had them... dungaree shorts would work, too) and everyone had a different colored tee shirt. I bought stick-on felt squares and cut out the m&m logo, 2 for each person (one on front, one on back). Everyone had old crocs, so I got craft paint to match the tee shirts and painted the crocs. We had red, orange, yellow, lime green, bright blue, brown, and tan, but these days you could use any color as m&ms come in so many now! I got the shirts, felt squares, and paint at ACMoore, probably spent less than $30 on all 7 costumes (because some of us already had crocs of the appropriate colors). It was cute as all get-out and we got many compliments!

That is such a cute (and cool) idea!!! Do you have any photos you woudn't mind sharing?

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures, but it was really easy to put these costumes together, and of course they packed easily, too. It was a LOT of fun, and my DH ended up being "That Guy" at the Monster's Inc Laugh Floor that night. We had a BLAST!!

One thing I meant to mention was that these costumes were also WEATHER appropriate. I felt so bad for the little kids in Tigger, Care Bears, etc. costumes. It's SO HOT in Florida in October, even in the evening. Please, if you are taking your kids to MNSSHP, remember that costumes for Halloween in New England are NOT good costumes for Florida, where it can be 80 degrees well into the evening!
