My son is 11, we went out shopping today and he found a very nice pair of black dress pants and a black vest, he also choose a fun tropical tie and white shirt. He didn't really want the jacket. Can he wear just the vest and a tie to dinner? I thought he looked very nice but wasn't sure if the rule was jacket required. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!:D

My son is 11 too. While I'm trying to convince my wife to let me rent tuxes for my two boys (wouldn't that make for a great picture of all of us!?), the alternative will be dark dress pants, white shirt and tie. No vest or jacket.

Have a great time!

I am a firm believer in not spending money on clothes kids will only wear once. When our son was 12 he wore nice pants and shirt and a sweater vest over them. He was comfortable and mom was appeased.

At that age my sons were dressy vest suits and it was very appropriate. I'm lening towards the tux this time too. They are even asking to do it.

He will look very hadsome - and as a mother of 3 boys, it helps when they select the clothes on the shopping trip, makes them 'walk taller' when they see that their selection was on target.

Jackets are not required so I wouldnt' spend the money either for a one time event.

Dress code is the only sore spot to what is normally a wonderful vacation.

Sounds fine to me. Dressy but fun and youthful too. They don't need to be miniature adults.

We're struggling with the shoe question around here.

Thank-you all for the encouragement! He will not need a suit for any other occasion this fall and is growing so fast right now, I really didn't want to spend the money on something he was not to excited about wearing.:teeth: I too thought about the tux ( it will make a nice picture) but neither he nor DH were crazy about the idea so I think we will go with what we found yesterday. Next week we'll work on shoes. I'll probably have to bribe him with something good to get him back to the mall though!

DD 4 has been so much more fun and easy to shop for this trip! Every time I or grandma goes to the store we find something so cute and inexpensive! She may need a steamer trunk to get everthing on board and I will need to change her clothes every couple hours so she wears them all!::yes::

Thanks again!

Pin Clubs are we on the same cruise? We are leaving Aug 21. There is going to be a quick Dis meet right after the boat drill. There is a whole thread on the meet board. Hope to get to see you there!:D

What we have done for shoes is

1) buy a very good pair of BLACK sneakers with laces. They work very well, the kids don't mind wearing them and you can get use out of them after the fact

2) buy a cheap pair of $15.00 payless black dress shoes. They are comfortable enough for the few hours they are worn and you don't mind as much when they sit in the back of the closet when your home and then get tossed for not fitting anymore.

Thankfully, we don't have that problem this year. Both my boys are now in private high school and must wear dress shoes to school every day. We're just buying good dress shoes a few weeks early and they'll have them for both the cruise and school. Kinda like an extra bang for our buck.

Yes, we are on the same cruise. I have my countdown clock set to 5:00 PM (when the ship actually sails) which is why mine is different from yours.

Yes, hopefully I will get to meet some folks from the boards.

Your kids can wear quite literally anything you will allow them to on formal night. Jackets are not required and black tennies are more than fine.

Most young people get into the spirit of the evening by dressing up a bit, but pleasant, well mannered children and a wonderful evening are far more important than what they wear.

You will see everything from sports shirts and dockers to a 3 year old in a tux. Nothing is out of place for a child on DCL except swimwear in the dining rooms.
