Thursday evening and ADR's for 6:00. A meal I'd been looking forward to all week--especially since we were taking Mrs. U's sister with us. Would be her first visit to Jiko and I was sure she was going to enjoy it. Seeing the AKL is always a pleasure and we were hoping for a bit of animal viewing prior to dinner. Alas--it was raining hard, so nothing to do before dinner except--SHOP!! The store at AKL always has something of interest, and sure enough, after dinner Mrs U went back and was able to make several purchases...
We arrived at a bit before six and were shortly led to our table. Our hostess was pleasant enough, but I honestly could not understand a word she was saying. I think she was asking us if we had a nice day in the parks--. Since our usual server Ron was off that evening, we didn't ask for anyone special. Our server that night was Mary, and she was excellent. She took great care of us and of others as well. She had two tables near ours--one with a father and small son, the other with an older couple, the lady being in a wheelchair. In both cases , after their entree was delivered, she noticed that the small boy and the lady in the wheelchair were both having a bit of a problem cutting their food. She went over and, after asking, cut the meat for them. A nice thing to do under the circumstances and I noticed the appreciation from the father, and from the older man.
Anyway--we immediately ordered drinks--Mrs U and her sister from that excellent wine list (with a large by-the-glass selection) while I opted for one of the specialty African beers. This is a nice touch--I'm sure the "usual suspects "are also available, but having the special beers on the menu just adds to the occasion. Since I'd already had Casa and Windhoek before, I decided to try Castle, a beer from Sandton South Africa. Pretty good, but not great. I later had a Tusker, from Kenya. Much better!!
Mrs U and I always like to order flatbreads when they are on menu. The portions are usually large, and the variety is endless. And Jiko has excellent flatbreads!! On the advice of Chef Anette Gray (who stopped over at our table to say hello), we tried one of their newer ones (Bacon-Arugula-Tomato, with Midnight Moon goat cheese and cilantro-yogurt drizzle) along with an old favorite (Kenyan Coffee Barbecued chicken, with grilled onions, apple julienne, and 4 cheeses). These two flatbreads split among the 3 of us were PLENTY of food. That bacon-tomato was very tasty. Somewhat like the BLT flatbread at California Grill (which reminds me of a BLT sandwich), but with more pizzaz and a bit of a kick. Excellent choice!
Now--I couldn't imagine myself at JIko and ordering anything except the Braised Lamb Shank. But I was determined to try something else this time, so I went for the Seared Jumbo scallops. Five big ones on the plate, cooked just right, served with Golden Brown mealie "pap" and spicy tomato-onion "chaka-laka" Sounds a bit spicy, but really wasn't at all. Very nice. For her entree, Mrs U had the Chermoula roasted Chicken, while her sister had---wouldn't you know it--that Berbere Braised Lamb Shank!! What luck. Both entrees were excellent and, since Mrs U's sister couldn't quite finish all the lamb, I was forced to step in and help her out :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 Should note again that the "berbere sauce" on the lamb is not hot or spicy at all. Actually it's very mild and does not interefere with the taste of the lamb.
Dessert and coffee were next--Mrs U and I both ordered Jiko sorbet, with Green Apple and frozen buttermilk yogurt, combined with a spiced granny smith applecake. Yum!! Just the right size portion and light enough to really enjoy after a big meal. Mrs. U's sister got the Pistachio Creme Brulee'--and liked it as much as I do when I order it.
So dinner done and another fine meal in the books. Should say that altho Jiko wasn't very full when we arrived at 6, it filled up quickly thereafter. And for some reason that night, there were a lot more children than we're used to seeing at this restaurant. Additionally, there were a lot more folks in shorts and T's than we usually see. Most times it's about 80-20 in favor of "business casual" to "theme park casual" . That night, about 50-50. Why?? Who knows??
WHat I DO know is that we'll be going back again next May!!

As a note: I have a current copy of Jiko's (by the glass and bottle) South African wine list, along with specialty drinks. If anyone has any particular questions, feel free to ask. Or, PM me and I'll put a copy in the mail to you.

Thanks Uncleromulus for the usual great review. My wife and I are going to Jiko's next Thursday and I think I'm going to try the lamb shank based upon your recommendation. I usually get the filet even though I'm not much of a steak person (hey you can cook em' at home any time...no big deal) because it's very good - I think it's time to try something else. I need to ask them when I get there how to make the Safari martini because I just can't seem to get the portions right guessing on my own.

UncleRomulus, I love your reviews! They're always great places, great food, and well thought out...however...I've gotta say - make with the V&A's review!!! I saw you say on a post that you would be eating there on the 4th, and ever since then I've been waiting for your post - I'm eating there next Tuesday, but leave on Saturday, and need a V&A review ASAP!!!! :)

Enjoyed the review. You surprised me as I was certain you'd ordered the lamb shank again.lol Glad you enjoyed your scallops this time although me thinks you orchestrated having your SIL getting the shanks so you could take advantage! Go on, admit it! lol

Perhaps I helped her just a little-- :) :)
luvpooh: just finished V&A review..posting now.

Our anniversary dinner at Jiko 2 years ago was the BEST meal I've ever had at WDW (although I've never been to V & A). I've been wanting to go back ever since.

I had a glass of wine there that I liked a lot. I think it was called Fusion or something like that. I wanted to buy a bottle, but have never been able to find it. Is it still on the list?

Praise 2 him:
There is a De Toren Fusion V, Stellenbosch 02, listed under the "South African Blends " section. BY the glass $15.50. BY the bottle-$70

Enjoyed your review of Jiko, which is our favorite restaurant at WDW. Last November my DH and I went on the Sunset Safari. I can't describe what a wonderful meal we had at Jiko afterwards. I usually drink sweet, white wines (German), but I enjoyed the S.A. wines that were paired with the dinner.

Will pm you about the wine list.

Kathy

Yes, I'm sure that's it because it was a blend. I was a new wine drinker then and took the server's suggestion and loved it. Thank you for looking!

Thanks for another great review Uncleromulus,

We dined at Jiko on Oct. 2 and just loved it. Jiko is still our favorite place to dine at WDW. It was just my wife and myself so we split the Kenyen Coffee flatbread ( which was great as always ). We then had the Felit Mignon and Pork tenderloin dinners. Yhey were just as good as always, so tender you could cut them with your fork. We split the Chocolate cake that they had on the menu for desert. I also had a Tusker beer to go with my meal. I always have to try one of the African beers when we dine at Jiko. We will be dining at Jiko's again in December. It was so nice dining at Jiko this time as we were staying at the AKL.

Thanks for sharing the review with us. Those flatbreads are great i will agree with that. I am glad eveyone enjoyed their meals. Jiko certainly has a terrific menu. I tried one of their African wines with a glass.

We ate Jiko Oct 5. Our 2 yr old was too excited and a little loud...we felt bad and ate hurriedly...

My wife and I shared the Bacon Arugula Tomato flatbread...excellent spicing...the wife said it was the first thing she had had at WDW this trip to challenge her taste buds...as good as the BLT flatbread at Cali Grill but also different enough...the wife actually wanted to try the Kalamata Olive flatbread and me the Kenyan Coffee BBQ chicken flatbread...we compromised with the Bacon Arugula Tomato as I hadn't seen it on the menu before...

For mains, she had the Filet Mignon with mac n Cheese...even well done, it was excellent. I had the Pan roasted Maize Crusted Halibut with Veges of the Moment and tomato butter sauce...the fish is a little bland and the sauce could have been spiced a little more...

All in all...a very good meal...

Cheers,

Joe

I've been waiting for this review! Well done, as usual. You have me looking forward to my second try at Jiko!

So, honestly, if you order what you really want next time (instead of making yourself try something new) at Jiko--what will it be?

Same question for dessert. If you weren't wanting to try "something different" what would you order?

Thank you much!

PS. I, too, found your SIL's ordering of the lamb shank quite suspicious! And... the fact that she needed help finishing it...just how much had you been hinting???? :rotfl:

Belle:
I'll "probably" try the pork tenderloin---and since it'll just be me and Mrs. U next time, no chance for any extra lamb!!
Dessert--actually like that sorbet so much that I'd get it again---

Thank you for the descriptive review. I enjoyed reading it, as well as the others that you post, very much.

I think Jiko's is the best restaurant at WDW - far better than CG which we thought very disappointing. We went last month and the service, quality of food and ambiance was outstanding.

Another great review. Makes me sad that we ended up needing to cancel Jiko this trip.

What is Chakalaka?

How very chivalrous of you to help out your SIL. ;)

A "spicy" tomamto-based sauce with African origins. This wasn't overpowering in any sense tho--.
