I got an e-mail from e-bay that says they will suspend my account if they don't recieve updated information. The mail provides a link to update my credit/debit card info. They want all my account information including my pay-pal password and my social security number. Is this for real??? I don't know what to do.

Do not do this!!! This is classic fishing for information done by "non friendly" types. I recall seeing an email from ebay stating that they will NEVER ask for such information in an email. And never give out your social security #, pins, passwords, etc. based on an email alone. When in doubt contact the company mentioned in the email, but do not reply to the email! Use a published phone number for the company (found on their website or in their phone book) to call them.

Forward the email to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com (whichever you get the email from). they will tell you whether its legit or not, most times it is not. Just a few minutes ago, i got a paypal one, reported it and sure enough, it was not legit. This time of year, they come out of the woodwork looking to rip people off. Just be smart and don't fall for it!

Do not click the blue words in an email message.

In the above situation, manually go to eBay's home page at your convenience and view your credit card information.

A little tip I learned from Paypal when I got a similar email and forwarded it to them.

Anytime PayPal emails you, it will begin with "Dear (your name)". The one I got was "Dear Paypal Member". If it does NOT have your name, it is NOT from Paypal.

I don't know if this would apply to ebay as well, or just PayPal.

The other advise here about contacting the company directly is a great one.

Even if it has your name, on line businesses do not email you and ask you for your credit card number and personal info. Never use the links in the email, they will look "legit", but aren't.

I thought the e-mail seemed very suspicious thats why I came here for the advice. They get you because the letter threatens to suspend your account. Thanks again to everyone for the help.

E-bay NEVER sends out e-mails. In the 8 years I have belonged to them, I've never received one. And even if they did, the would never ask for your credit card or bank information.

Just another word of warning, the latest paypal scam i rec'd this morning told me that someone from Europe logged into my paypal account and now i have to "verify my identity" by clicking on the link. What will they think of next!
