I just got back from a 4 night cruise on the Disney Wish from August 22-26. I read a lot of differing opinions on the new ship before we left, so I figured I’d share my thoughts. I have been on the Fantasy twice before and the Magic once.
First the Wish is a beautiful ship. The artistic design of the ship and the details that are put into everything are amazing. I was already impressed on previous cruises but the Wish really takes it to a whole other level.
I was a bit worried about the layout of the ship but we did not find it confusing at all. I had read about people running into dead ends everywhere but that never happened to us. The switch from three sets of elevators to two did not impact us. But note that we tend to avoid the elevators on the Disney ships anyways and stick to the stairs, especially at busy times.
We had stateroom 9114 which is the first deluxe family stateroom on the second bump out. We had a bit of extra space on our verandah which was nice. But I really liked being able to see out to the front of the ship while at the railing. Due to the orientation of the verandah, it was still quite private.
One criticism I had read is that the Wish staterooms do not have enough storage space. We found that there was actually a ridiculous amount of storage space, much more than we could use. There were shelves and hooks crammed everywhere around the room. Now, this was our first time in a deluxe room, but it is similar to what we’ve experienced in our staterooms on the other ships.
Overall I found the food on the Wish to be better than on the Fantasy or Magic. Especially the entrees at the rotational dining and the fare at the Festival of Foods were an improvement over other ships. Marcelines is about the same as Cabanas, nothing special there.
I really liked the Luna and Bayou spaces on the Wish, we found them to be more open and inviting than similar areas on other ships (D Lounge, the Tube). Especially Luna, it was a great venue. The other bars/lounges were about the same as what you’d find on other ships.
Of course the one exception is Hyperspace Lounge. We booked a family reservation for our second day as soon as we connected to the cruise terminal wifi. It was really neat, but to be honest the beverages there were underwhelming. I think we would have been fine with visiting it during one of the open house times.
Speaking of open houses, we peeked into the kids club areas during the open house and they looked amazing. Our kids are more the Vibe/Edge age and their areas were nice, but the younger kids club looked really fun.
As for negatives, we found the design of the promenade to be very poor. I think that a lot of people enjoy walking or running on the promenades of the other ships. Having the promenade of the Wish split across multiple levels and not actually go the whole way around the ship is just a weird decision. We disliked this area.
We thought the the Disney Seas the Adventure show was fine but the Little Mermaid show was not good. We couldn’t quite put our finger on what was wrong with it, but it just didn’t appeal to us. We skipped the Aladdin show because we have seen Aladdin the musical multiple times before. I guess the Wish has a few changes to that show but it wasn’t enough to convince us to go.
Regarding daily activities, we enjoyed games like Majority Minds and Match Your Mate. We found Hannah? (I think that’s her name, she’s from Wales) and Belle to be especially entertaining from the cruise team. However, we missed activities like towel folding and cooking demonstrations that we enjoyed on other ships. I’m not sure if these are just on temporary hiatus due to Covid or what.
We also found our dinner service to be below the quality we’ve received on the Fantasy and Magic. I’m not sure if it was because of the new ship, or maybe inexperienced staff, but they seemed very busy and rushed. We still received great service but not to the phenomenal level we’ve had on previous Disney cruises .
Overall we were very happy with our cruise and had a great time. I would definitely consider it again if we went on another Disney cruise.
