Another Disney Store validation....

Does one know when the closing store will start having stuff on sale? I'm intrested in the Gwinnett Place Store.
Also does anyone know When did the Nothlake store close? I don't remember hearing about that one.

Thanks!

With regard to some areas having multiple stores and others none, I disagree about the "easier to manage" aspect. First of all, that's what regional managers do. I have never known of a chain system where the stores themselves weren't responsible for their own management at the store level. Secondly, it makes no sense at all from a profit sense. Multiple stores pull traffic from each other if they are serving the same area. Those with no stores are not likely to drive 3+ hours just to go to a Disney store (most people didn't do that even when the Stores were in their first youth and were still considered "destination boutiques"). I have no reason to travel to northern Indiana. I don't need to go to Chicago so, in these days of high gas prices, I'll shop online which means the kind of impulse buying that Disney has received from me in the past will be non-existent. It makes even less sense to keep the two stores in northern Indiana (which realistically can be served by the Chicago region) and will certainly pull traffic from each other and take all three out of the major city in the state. Sorry, but when the decision to keep some stores and not others was made, did anyone have the sense to use push pins in a map of the U.S. to see what the outcome actually resembled?

I was only speculating about one potential reason behind the decisions. Also, when I referred to the relative ease of running stores in "clustered" areas, I was thinking more along the lines of transportation and warehousing goods. I know store chains that have waited to expand into other areas until they have a good system in place for getting products to those areas. This was just a guess though.
:)

Even though my local store is on the acquisition list, I too am anxious because I question whether it will make the final list.

I understood your theory and it may well be the valid one. I just wanted to point out other considerations. I didn't mean to sound cross or snippy but I've just lost VMK and now to lose my Disney store too...sigh. I can go back to the "old" days of 2 trips a year to Disney World and movies to get my "fix". At least this time I have the DIS and Disney online shopping if the worst happens.

When I was at our local Disney Store yesterday, she was under the impression that nothing is finalized. Further, she was shocked to hear me say that the store in Myrtle Beach (Broadway at the Beach) would be closing. "They sell a lot more than we do." But , I think the newer Tanger store near coupled with the location of Tanger as opposed to Broadway makes a difference. Regardless, our local store (Fayetteville, NC) is under the impression that any store is still a possiblity of being on the chopping block . This is sad for employees. She is also under the impression that if the Disney store is closed, that TCP in the same malls are likely to close as well. Don't know if that's a possibility or not, though. TCP is my 2nd favorite store :(

TCP will not be affected by the Chapter 11 filing for TDS. They are two separate divisions. I listened to the webcast that Hoop had with investors and financial folks. That was one point on which they were VERY adament.

I called the Gwinnett Place TDS today and talked with a CM that swore up and down that just because the store was on the closure list that it didn't mean that Disney was going to close the store anytime soon. We shall see.

In all honesty, before the stress gets to much for some, just wait and see what happens after May 1. And whatever a CM might say, they do not know anything for sure. It is all a guessing game and rumors.

Well, I would not hold out hope for anything in that mall... It's really taken a beating since Mall of Georgia opened. I can't recall the last time we went there. (have dropped by the Talbots outlet a few times however!)

I spoke with a CM at the Mall of GA store on Wednesday and she said they are not closing. :woohoo:

About the outlet at Discover Mills! I love it!! There are a few things that seem to be regular prices, but lots at a discount. Kids and adult t-shirts for $4.99 I even found adult Pirates of the Caribbean shirts for us to wear at the P&P Party.
5-6" animals for $1.99
Girls pajama gowns $4.99
That's all I remember right off.

From what I understand, the lists had to come out due to the Bankruptcy Proceedings, and nothing is etched in stone, I have also heard that if they close a store it could take well over 200 days. Also heard they listed the stores according to there profits (not too sure how true that is). If you look too there aren't too many Mass stores listed on the lists, which I don't think means too much, as it could have been an oversite. I have also heard that the final list should be out on April 22, 2008. (Yes I have like I said I heard alot as my cousin works for the Disney Store). So I think its a wait and see thing. It appears disney has to see what leases it wants to keep, or negotiate, and the cost to get out of certain leases at the mall. They are also geographly to see where there stores are, as they are trying to do away with it being in every shopping mall, they want it to be not my words, what my cousin words, a place people travel to get the experience. So I am like most of you, waiting to see and hear what happens. He is hoping his store is kept as it is on the list they want to keep. He also is wondering where he works per. diem if they will keep him, as Disney never had per. diem employees that was a Hoop thing. He is hoping because he is curious to see what kind of perks they offer.

That sounds great! With every post, I get more excited! (So silly for a girl of my age!)

I just told my 8YO we would be going there after his dentist appt.....I'm sure he will rub it in my 11YO's face when he gets home from school that day! :rotfl:

As for the GP mall, I hate to agree. It was a wonderful mall when it opened. I grew up around there, and we lived in Lawrenceville for a long time. We used to go there exclusively. Then, things in Gwinnett started to change...

Now, the MOG is the mall to be at. On one hand, it is sad that GP is losing a store because that mall really needs business, but on the other hand...I don't want to sacrifice the MOG store for Gwinnett's because it's too hard to get to Gwinnett from Cumming!!!

I understand. I just didn't want to seem like I was not empathetic.
 :flower3:

I would be very disappointed if I found out that I would not have a Disney Store within at least an hour drive of my home or work - though I would not admit that anywhere but DIS!
:rotfl:

Also, with all this talk about the intention for Disney Store to become a "destination," I am really starting to question whether the store in my local mall will stay open. It is on the acquired list, but the employee I spoke with the other night gave me a strange look when I asked her about it. She said yes, it would stay open, but something about the way she said it made me think she wasn't convinced. I will be disappointed if it closes, but the other area stores are much bigger and have better selection anyway. I visit all of them often.

VMK is closing? I played that when it first came out, but have not had time to do so lately. Darn!
:scared1:

Just some observations...

I've worked for The Disney Store since 2000. I've experienced what the store was like pre and post Hoop running them. I must say my store in Salem, NH was remodeled before Hoop took over that transformed it from "Classic Disney" to cheesy, plastic Disney.

We used to have Disney figurines of the fab five and other classic Disney characters now we have cheap compressed cardboard cutouts of characters throughout the store. The store is plastic, fake and not very magical.

This in my opinion was the beginning of the end. Disney did away with the Classics Collection, figurines etc., artwork and began to push plush and other cheap merchandise that had more of a profit margin.

I must admit, as much as I loved the Disney Gallery stuff, we sold very little of it. It was great for guests that wanted to "window shop" but in the retail business its all about shelve space and how much product is moved.

I agree with several of the posters that it would be nice to have adult, kitchen and collectables back in the stores but the reality is unless (we), guest regularly purchase this product they won't/can’t keep it in the stores.

I'm so excited that Disney is taking the stores back but there are still many issues to be resolved before we have the old Disney Stores back and still have them be profitable for the parent company/shareholders.

Dennis-

There weren't any MA stores on that list...does that mean now that Burlington has closed they're planning on keeping the rest? The only one I can think of is at Solomon Pond Mall but still...I want it to stay! It's a simon mall though does that make my chances better or worse? I'm so confused by all this.

We're trying to save VMK (taking inspiration from past DIS efforts to save Figment as well as EPCOT's 25th anniversary). If anyone is interested, just pop over to the Virtual Magic Kingdom forum board where you can find out more about it.

I feel badly for the Cast Members who will lose stores. Many of them have worked there for a long time and went through the bad times with Disney, the rough patch with TDS, and the more encouraging times of the past year and a half. I think for them, this will be very hard, since many missed being Cast Members and have been excited about becoming CMs again.

After the sale there will be NO stores in WV. The good side of that is that there will be no sales tax added when I buy from the online store. My closest store is more than an hour away, but I just don't go to TDS anymore. Once the collectibles went away I stopped--besides I manage to buy collectibles online and usually with a discount and free shipping.

Same with all the Pittsburgh area stores- the CM swear that they are NOT closing!

The CM that I spoke to swore up and down that they were not closing. I then told her that I had seen the store on the closure list. She asked what I was talking about. I explained that it was part of the documents that can be easily found online, if you or someone that you know on a Disney message board, knows what to look for. She then stammered and came back at me with just because a store is on the closure list doesn't mean that it's going to be closed. Those are just not going to be paid for in the settlement. The stores will be given back to Disney and then it's up to Disney to decide what they will do with the stores. :rolleyes1

I just decided to let it drop. We know that it's a sad fact that the writing is on the wall. I hate the atmosphere at GPM, but I hate the drive up to MoG. I also dislike DM, even though it's closer than either of the other malls. It's kind of a sad time for me. :guilty:

Since nothing is official, it would make it difficult for CMs to comment if their store is closing or not. Once something is official (and the CMs are allowed to release the information after being directed by TCP or Disney to do so), then you will be more likely to find CMs who are willing to talk about the situation.

i guess we're lucky here - we have a genuine disney store in a local mall that wasn't taken over (paramus park mall, NJ)

I just discovered this mall recently I usually go to Garden State Plaza and they closed the Disney Store in that mall.

I really liked the Disney Store in Paramus Park, it's one of the largest mall Disney Stores I've ever seen! Love the way they have that stuffed animal room!:goodvibes

Speaking of kitchen items, I want a Mickey Waffle Iron!! They were discountinued ages ago!
