I am horrible at decorating. I can copy from a magazine and take direction but I can't figure it out on my own. Soooo ... I need help.

We are closing on our first house in 8 days and moving in on the 24th. I'll be doing some minor work the week inbetween.

The house has been fairly remodeled as far as kitchen/baths go. It also has new carpet and new hardwood floors. I have a few decorating challenges that we will face over the next few years.

FIRST .. the living room is BLUE. New Blue carpet and blue walls. I can't do anything about the blue carpet for now, eventually we will replace it and maybe put the carpet that is there in one of the bedrooms upstairs since it's fairly new and in great condition. However, I can't live in a BLUE living room, I want to paint the walls something more neutral and try to tone down the carpet.

Any suggestions?

I don't know if can tell the color blue from this picture but it's pretty basically blue. This picture is taken from the front door so shows most of the room. Their are two front windows on the right. Any suggestions? We don't have a ton of furniture now so that we will add over the next few months.

You can try a throw rug in a color that might blend with the blue carpet something you can live with and paint the walls a light beige/off white or acru{not sure of spelling} . It's a nice house and I wish you much happiness in your new home. Google rugs and you will find many different colors and styles. I might add the blue looks very nice but I know how you feel about not being able to live with it. Just thing it could be purple lol.

Thanks.

Yes, it is a nice blue. Maybe it's the furniture in there now, reminds me of very much a grandmother's house. I would love to replace it with a nice, high quality neutral berber or something like that. Eventually.

I like very neutral, warm tones in a simplistic country decor!!

Do you have any artwork, accessories, and/or furniture that you currently own that you'd like to keep in that room? If you do, I'd use some of those colors.

If you're starting from scratch and like neutrals I'd go with browns. Then you could use blue as one of your accessory colors and then pull in some other colors as well. I'd find some kind of pattern in a pillow, picture etc. that has browns, blues, beiges, and a brighter color - maybe a deep pumpkin orange? - in it to help pull it all together.

I second the idea of an area rug. Find one that has some blues in it as well as other colors. Then pick one of the other colors as your new wall color. When you said simple country, I saw a large rag rug over the carpet that has various shades of blue, tans, browns and a little burgundy. Choose one of the tans as your wall color and incorporate some of the other warmer colors in your furniture and accessories. Enjoy your new home!

Thanks for the ideas ...

No, we don't have any artwork that we want to use. We really have limited furniture as we got rid of a lot when we moved up from Florida. We have a medium tan couch that will go in that room for now and eventually into the family room as we work to get new furniture in the living room.

I think it's interesting the nvdismom and I suggested basically the same palate - and you already have a tan couch! I'd start looking around for stuff that has blues and tans in it (and other colors) and see what you are attracted to.

I'd do a light tan on the walls (think sand color), especially since you have a tan couch.

I might also consider doing a butter yellow on the walls, and then finding a couple of throw pillows for the couch that pull in tan, yellow and blue.

Sorry, I can't help. My living room is that exact color. :lmao:

I agree with others who said that a buttery yellow is very pretty. My kitchen and dining rooms are that color and I love it
