Another couple wants to take you/DH out to eat-what price restaurant would U suggest?

Here's the situation...my brother and SIL are in-state for the weekend, and they have graciously offered to take DH and I out to eat. However, they would like US to pick the restaurant. Granted, they are in a city that is ~1-2 hours away from where we live (they are in the process of adopting and are taking adoption seminars throughout the weekend), but my husband grew up in the city they are in so he does know alot of good places to eat there.

What DH and I are pondering now is this: We know that they would especially like seafood as we live near the coast. We don't *know* them very well at all due to their isolation from our extended family get-togethers for reasons that we have no clue about-it will probably be a little awkward, but I wanted to make an effort since we have such a hard time getting together with them when we drive back "home". I know they have had money problems in the past, and they are in the process of adopting a child. DH and I are struggling right now with my disability and have little money ourselves...SO we don't want to take them somewhere that they can't afford.

How should we handle this situation?

It's thoughtful of you to worry about making the right choice. If it were me, I would pick 2 or 3 places: a nice family-type place, a chain like Friday's or Bennigan's and one more upscale place with great food. Then ask your guests ahead of time, which type of place/food are they "hungry" for?

Remember while you are thinking of their financial hardship here, they may be thinking what fun it is to do something nice for someone else. No one can be a cheerful giver if no one is a gracious recipient!

You are very thoughtful. Are there some affordable, out of the way seafood restaurants near you? Any time I am at the cost I am shocked to see just how much seafood is there. I agree with the previous poster that you should give them a few choices. Hope the dinner isn't awkward and you all have a great time together.

Pretty much exactly what I was going to say.

We never could find a reasonable seafood restaurant so we settled on Ruby Tuesdays, a favorite of ours...and I had a $10 gift certificate to boot! The dinner was fine; I asked a bunch of questions concerning the adoption and that kept them talking! Thanks for all your suggestions!
