A Jewish teacher is offended that the classroom door across the hall was decorated with a Christmas tree made of children's handprints with the words "Santa's Helpers" on top.

The teacher who created the display pulled the decorations and replaced it with a sign stating "The grinch has stolen the bulletin board".

Now let the flames begin....
This was totally appropriate when I was in grade school 15-20 years ago, nobody even thought twice about doing it. Now, a vocal minority yells and screams about being offended and the whole country has to change how things are done. Personally-if you don't like how we celebrate Christmas here, go back to where you came from and celebrate it your way.

I'm not so sure what is "OFFENSIVE" about Chritmas decorations.

I can understand other religions requesting thier holiday symbols to be added as well, but as I wouldn't find those offensive, I'm not sure why other religions would find symbols of Christmas offensive. :confused3

I agree with you. With every little thing someone is offended. Butch up!!

That's right--everyone should go back where they came from. Guess that means most Christians should head on back to Europe along with the Jews right?

You know what I am so sick of people being offended...it is time to offend more people...If you don't think I have been offended you have got to be kidding me.
Merry Christmas!

I don't think the Native Americans celebrated Christmas. Should we all go back to where we "came from", or just the non-Christians? :sad2:

It is happening because America is being forced to forget the melting pot where everyone comes together, now it is "I want it my way because I will sue or cause trouble until I get my way." The people and government of the US have tried to make sure no one feels uncomfortable or are offended and it has gone too far, so now that many of those same people are offended and uncomfortable themselves.

I was talking to a mom on my sons baseball team and she was telling me that even though they are Buddhist they still have a Christmas tree because they chose to come to the US (the greatest country..HER words) and now they need to live like we do and she thought it was only fair to her children to teach them "American" ways (again, HER words) because they are American. Her and her DH are Vietnamese. She also said she totally disagrees with people from other countries coming to the US and trying to make it like the country they left, if they didn't want to live like Americans then why come here? It was very refreshing talking to her.

What next? Can your Jewish neighbor get offended by your Christmas lights on your home?

I get the whole seperation of church and state...really I do. I remember in grade school that when we would have birthday/Christmas parties there was one boy who would have to go to the office or to the library. I found out that he was a Jehovah's witness and wasn't allowed to celebrate birthdays or holidays. If you don't celebrate a particular holiday why can't you just ignore it? Why must you ruin it for the MANY who do?

Bravo. :cheer2:
We need more people with her way of thinking.
I am sick of people complaining about Christmas decorations. I have no problem with having other religious symbols being displayed along side the Christian and traditional decorations.
I think it is hogwash to have to remove stuff because someone is offended. :furious:

How could a cute kids hand prints be offensive. The Jewish teacher could have has her kids us their hands to make a menorah and put that on display. Add a new hand (candle) each day.

Way to teach the kiddos respect and tolerance.

(Hogwash was the only word I could use that wouldn't get me banned but I have a much better word for it.)

What I find funny is that the objection wasn't to the tree (note - for fun, count the number of people who get *this* story wrong and claim there was an objection to a tree). The objection was to the phrase "Santa's Helpers".

No, I think the second teacher already showed the kiddos that. :sad2: :sad2:

Wouldn't it have been more effective to have put a Jewish decoration on her door and then to have used the experience to teach respect and tolerance for other celebrations???

I think that many people forget that fact. ;) :teeth: :teeth: If people are told that they should "go back where they came from", then I guess the majority of us should start packing. ;)

Actually the article has many more details. The tree was taken down, but was then put back up.

The Jewish teacher's complaint was not that the tree offended her. Her complaint was that ALL of the children were listed as "Santa's Helpers" on the tree, even though some of the children were likely not Christians and didn't believe in Santa. She didn't ask for the tree to be taken down--she asked that the name "Santa's Helper" be changed so as not to be associated with any particular holiday so that the non-Christian children wouldn't be lumped together with the Christian children (especially given that everyone in the article keeps talking about how the school is big on multiculturalism and diversity). It was the principal who ordered the tree to come down completely, but then she rethought the decision and allowed the tree to go back up in its original form because excluding Christmas wouldn't fit in with their multi-cultural goals. Though the teacher could have put the tree back up with "Santa's Helper" by the kids names, she chose to change it to "Happy Holidays."

I would have thought that a better solution would have been to leave the tree as it was, but also put up decorations with the kid's names on them for all other holidays. Then it could be that everyone is Santa's helper, and everyone has a dreidel, and so on for Kwanza and Yule, and maybe Ramadan and Diwali as well (even though it's the wrong time of year for those holidays). Then it could really be about learning from one another as the principal wants it to be.

I just don't understand how people can be offended by Decorations. :confused3

I am not offended when I see a menorah or any other decorations for that matter. I think it is great we all believe in something different and celebrate as such.

The problem is when my great grandparents came from Ireland and Germany, they would have been laughed at if they vocalized any distaste for the traditions of the United States. Now, we are so afraid of offending people and being sued, we cower to every little complaint.

Truthfully, if you don't like how Christmas is celebrated here, find a place or country that you do agree with.
