Next will be a story that bedbugs carry Swine Flu virus. That would really get people in a tizzy.
The article where I obtained the info did not state which resort specifically, other than it was the All Star Resort. I will have to go back and see if there is any further news.
...futher backs up my earlier statement.
here is yet another poster starting a thread that, "DID NOT STATE WHICH RESORT SPECIFICALLY....."
In another words, scare mongering once again so that the general public is riled up into a feeding frenzy of hate, anger and paranoia.
therefore people, consider the source of what one reads before reacting....
Bugs are bugs...they like to travel too!
But the story was true.

Besides checking the mattress for them, is there anything we can do as guests upon check-in? Any kind of spray to kill them, like Lysol or anything? TIA![]()
I was in Key West in a private rental home with my family (12 of us in all). Got up in the middle of the night on our first night to use the restroom returned to bed and noticed what I thought were black fuzzies on my pillow...when I flicked it is scurried. I turned on the lights and threw back the covers and found the bed crawling with bed bugs. I was so grossed out I started screaming and my mom and dad came running (I was 28 and married at the time)
The rental company moved some of us to another home but for one night while they "cleaned" the room but offered no other compensation. I wasn't looking for a full refund....heck a dinner on them would have made me happy. They acted like it was my fault - we had just checked in about 5 hours before this happened. Before the maintenance crew cleaned the room my mom and I put a X on the pillows and mattresses to make sure new ones were delivered...and new ones were in the room.
Exterminators can not get rid of bed bugs. Mattresses and pillows must be thrown out. Sheets and linens can be cleaned in the hottest water possible. Carpets need to be steam cleaned, tile floors and furniture should be scrubbed with a hot water/bleach solution. This also includes cleaning things like where a screw attaches a leg to a table. The bugs like to hide in dark places. Outlet covers should be removed and cleaned. Basically a top to bottom cleaning of the room.
When you return home, leave your suitcase outside and unpack that way (which we did). They can travel home with you in your suitcase.
Bed bugs are not a fun ordeal to go through, I didn't sleep for a few nights because everything felt like a bug. I had a rash on my arms for about 2 weeks after that trip. Don't know if it was nerves or the bites.
Now when I check into hotels I check mattresses, if you see what looks like dark reddish brown rust in the seams there is a chance (and I stress chance because I don't want people freaking out and getting mad at me) that there might be an issue. I have gotten over that incident and haven't had one since and I travel at least once a month. 7 Years and counting - bug free!
The sad thing is that was the last time I got to see my grandfather and spend time with him, he passed away shortly after that trip...so dealing with this issue can take away from the magic of your vacation.
Interesting. I hadn't heard anything about bed bugs in awhile. It was all over national news outlets and then nothing.
It's in one of the NYC papers or news sites at least once a week. Sometimes they are in hotels, sometimes in apartment buildings (people who bought a mattress from a place like Sleepy's that also removes old mattresses - bed bugs must move from the old mattress to the new while in the truck. Ewwww!!!!!)
