I am borrowing 2006 points to take family on our next trip in early Dec 2005. I have a Dec use year. If they happen to cancel - do I just lose those points? I think thats the case but just wanted to make sure

Dec is a very popular time - you might be able to rent your reservation.

You will have to use them before the end of Dec or lose them. Hopefully they will cancel far enough in advance that you could rent them out to someone or possibly extend your visit or maybe even an additional impromptu trip

With a December Use Year, the Dec '06 points become Dec '05 points. If you have to cancel the Dec '05 trip, you still have nearly 12 months to use all of the '05 points, including the borrowed ones.

As long as you cancel more than 31 days before check-in, you would have until 11/30/06 to use all of the '05 points. If you cancel less than 31 days before check-in the points go into a Holding Account. Holding Account points can only be used to book a room on 60 days notice or less, and must be used by the end of the Use Year (again 11/30/06).
