Another banking/borrowing question

Hello friends. What started as a 7-night trip has turned into a 9-night trip -- with a few nights AKV CL, followed by 5 nights AKV SV (with a waitlist for Poly LV), and the last night at Boardwalk. (Just snagged that last one today, as there were NO studios available for that final night!!!) Right now I have enough points for everything (with 4 points to spare). I should just leave "well-enough" alone and cancel the Poly waitlist because I would be 22 points shy -- which would be borrowed against next year.

But we really love the Poly!!!

So here's my question... I do not want to borrow 22 points from next year, but realize that would happen automatically if the waitlist came through. (I wish there was an option to pay cash for one-time points, but there is not for the waitlist.) If that happened, would I be able to cancel that last night at Boardwalk so I could eventually bank those 16 points (currently applied to that one-night stay) for next year and then pay cash for that last night for another room on property? Then I'd be in the hole for only 6 points next year.

The chances of the Poly waitlist coming through are slim to none (because it's during a busy vacation week), so I'm probably worrying for nothing, but it kind of hurts to cancel it!

For anyone interested.... Update in Post #21

Are you on vacation because you like to move and disrupt or are you maybe over doing it? There will always be next time.

Well, you're moving anyway after CL. IMO I would rather move to a new resort than stay in the same one but not have CL. So moving isn't the issue; you're already doing that.

Do you know what your plans will be for next year? Will the extra points if Poly comes through really hurt you? I personally started off borrowing and it took over 5 years for it to actually cause a problem. And that was hardly a problem. :) We simply adjusted.

I personally would want to change to Poly (but I am personally not the biggest AK fan so there might be some bias here and not *just* wanting to move away from the CL resort) so I would keep the waitlist AND check on the days manually every day.

Thank you for your thoughts! We do have to pack up anyway, so I really don't mind moving.

Not sure of our plans yet for next year, but we do use most of our points every year...which is why I'd prefer not to borrow so many points. But we could certainly make due either way.

I guess I can't overlook the fact that I could waitlist that last night for AKV, which would probably come through, and save a move at the end of our trip.

We adore AKV, but really fell in love with the Poly last summer. Watching the fireworks from our room was incredible...and just may be worth the extra move!

Yes, you could cancel the last night at BWV and bank the points as long as it were done 31 days or more in advance of checking in there and you were still in your banking window and current points were used to book the room. :)

Thank you!

If you are within 7 months and need OTU for a wait list, you can always call and book a dummy reservation and purchase OTU points. Then, go online and cancel that reservation, which will put the OTU points back into your account. You can wait list now and they will be available. Of course, the big drawback with this plan is that if it does not fill, you have purchased the points, and they will expire if you don't use them. If it were me, and I knew chances were slim, and I really wanted to have Poly, I'd wait list and allow the borrow!

Also, OTU points do not show up in your account and you have to call MS to use them. Of course, if the waitlist works, that won't be a problem because MS will be completing the new reservation - you can call and ask them to note on your reservation that there are OTU points available in your account that should be used for the waitlist should it come through.

Thank you Sandi and Carol! That thought did occur to me. If I tried that approach (making a dummy reservation and then canceling) and the waitlist did NOT come through, would MS reallocate my points -- replacing some 2017 points on a previous reservation with the OTU points, so that I could bank the extra points for next year? Or am I just out of luck if I don't use them during the current use year? If they would reallocate, would the OTU points have to replace an entire reservation, or could they just switch out 20 points? So complicated!!!

They will just switch out the 20 points. I'd probably have them do that immediately after you cancel so you don't have to worry about using up the OTU points and then set up the waitlist which would use the remainder of your points if it fills or leave them for you to bank if not.

Thank you! That is very good advice. I already set up a waitlist for the Poly, so can I leave it as is... or do I have to cancel and start a new one after switching the points? I hope not, as that would mean I "lose my place in line."

You can leave it then. Just book the dummy reservation, cancel and then call back to ask to have the OTU points applied to your existing reservation,

Would someone mind explaining what OTU points are? This is the first time I am seeing this term.

Each UY an owner can purchase up to 24 one time use points to use on a reservation at the 7 month window. They are $15/other and you need to call in to make the reservation and purchase them. They cannot be bought for the 11 month window though.

Thank you for the explanation!

Ok, great. Thank you for all of the helpful information!
There is one other thing though I hadn't asked was if the other reservation was also made in the 7 month window? It would need to have been to apply the OTU points. Or you could apply it to another part of the trip your trying to switch some nights to PVB since I think that was in the 7 month window?

I booked two reservations at my home resort (AKV) at the 11 month mark - two nights AKV CL and five nights AKV SV. At the 7 month mark, I waitlisted for 5 nights at the Poly. After the 7 month mark, I added one night at BWI (16 points) at the end of my trip. So if I understand correctly, the best I could do would be to make a dummy reservation worth 16 points, cancel it, and then swap those OTU points for the current use year points allocated to BWI ressie. Is that right?

Actually, I have 4 points left for 2017, so does that complicate things further?
