Another, and another

Ugh, yeah it's horrible. I have an appointment with the genetics counsellor and I have another important ultrasound. Luckily DH knows how to drive in the snow, since he spent 4 years in Alaska, but nobody around here knows how to handle snow. I think the Baltimore area is even worse than Prince William county was when we lived there growing up.

Well, having lived in Caribou, Maine for a year and northern Japan for 4 years (like upstate New York), I can tell you the the snow here actually is *different* than in those really cold places.

Around here, because of our slightly warmer temps, we usually get a very thin layer of ice underneath, mostly wet snow. It is not easy to drive on. The snow in Maine and Japan was a piece of cake to drive through. I never even had 4-WD in those places (and I often had rear wheel drive) and it just wasn't an issue.

I find it awful here. Very treacherous even when there's not much on the ground. The snow we had in December was about a close to Maine snow as I've seen here. Very dry, very fluffy and I actually drove around in it and had very little slippage. I thought the snowfall we had this past weekend, while less, was much harder to drive around in.

I've heard 3-6" on Friday, another 12"+ on Saturday and some remenants on Sunday. I think we will be getting close to what we had in December.

I just had the weather channel on. Across the bottom of the screen they issued a winter storm watch starting Fri. morning (I'm in Harford Cty). Snow and wind is expected late Fri. morning thru Sat. They are calling for 12 inches but then the message said localized snow in excess of 20 inches.

From the National Weather Service Winter Storm Watch announcement:

ACCUMULATIONS...THIS STORM IS LIKELY TO PRODUCE 12 OR MORE
INCHES OF SNOW IN THE WATCH AREA...WITH A GOOD CHANCE FOR
LOCALIZED AMOUNTS OVER 20 INCHES.

Sorry for repeat, I was posting at the same time as mamamary.

I read on the NOAA website it looks like it could be the same amount or more from December. HOLY COW!!

Apparently some kind more snow is on the way for Tuesday kinda like lastnights I guess. I can't handle all this snow.:headache:

I'm going to the storm for goodies. At least everytime its snowed I get another room in my house painted:rotfl:if I didn't I'd be baking and eating the whole entire time.

Wasn't that the most ridiculous thing ever! We got a dusting, literally NOTHING and gridlock. My husband has a 50 minute commute and got about 10 minutes away from home in 2 hours. He turned around and went home. It took me an extra 15 minutes but I can take back roads to work. I told him to not even bother going in tomorrow morning and to just work from home until lunch time. I just don't understand why there is such gridlock for 1/2 an inch of snow.....it's PA, we are used to snow!

I think it was the ice that made the difference. I agree it was only a small amount of snow, but the fact that the roads weren't brined, the rain/snow instantly froze and caused a sheet of black ice that nobody new was really there. Within a few minutes the damage was done and the roads were gridlocked with accidents everywhere.

:scared1::scared1: I hope your daughter is okay!

Yeah they were fine. When it all happened, DD17 had just gotten picked up from her friend. DD12 went across the street for the bus, which didn't come. 20 minutes later I called him and the girl that was there over to the house. I orginally said I'll take you to school - but then after further inspection realized that the major highway was backed up, that our side ride out of our development was backed up and that there must be an accident. The mom told me about all the accidents. I had her call her mom and that is when I found out about the accidents everywhere. At that moment my heart sank as I realized I had no idea if my daughter made it to school. Luckily the moment I hung up with the other mom she called. They were fine. I told her to stay put because I couldn't get to her. Her friend called his dad, but I don't think he ever got to them. After about 20 more minutes they finally got the car out of the ditch (I don't think it was a huge one) and he drove her home. It sure is a scary feeling when you realize there are tons of accidents out and you don't know where your kids are. I also called DH to make sure he was ok, he made it out before it got really bad - but it took him a long time to get to work.

We got about 2-3 inches this morning. It was absolutely beautiful. The kids had a 2 hour delay, but the roads were totally clear and fine.

I'm hearing that this weekend could be feet. Supposed to start Friday night and go all day Saturday. I'm going to go grocery shopping tomorrow night and just have a nice fun at home day. I'm sort of looking forward to it, except just realized DH has Guards this weekend. If it's bad, maybe they will cancel it.

We fly out of BWI in friday morning. I don't think the snow will be an issue for us then but here's hoping there are no issues.

Glad to hear your DD is ok.

I agree with you about how beautiful the snow was this morning. I took pictures of the trees in my yard. They look like they are covered in cotton balls...so pretty.

Today's update

1:30 PM WEDNESDAY 2.3.2010 HIGH IMPACT HISTORIC MAJOR WINTER STORM

Please review discussions from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction for guidance from federal:

NCEP/HPC: Snow & Ice | Preliminary Extended | Sterling, VA NWS

UPDATE # 1. Based on the team's 12+ hours of analysis into climate teleconnection trends, computer model data and affect of current snowcover on temperature projections, the forecast team has assembled 2 scenarios for the Mid-Atlantic:

SCENARIO A On Friday, snow should arrive around noon in southwest Virginia, and after the evening commute along I-95. A widespread 12-24" of snow from Washington to Philadephia with higher amounts further inland, ending Sunday morning. Some mixing may occur along I-95.

SCENARIO B On Friday, snow arrives across the region by mid-afternoon and the evening commute along I-95 is highly problematic. Mixing of sleet occurs in lower southern Maryland and along the eastern shore. Snow amounts of 18-26" across the western Chesapeake Bay into the piedmont with isolated higher amounts.

Supporting data The 12z (7am) projections from the North American Mesoscale (NAM) project roughly 3.0 inches of liquid for the Baltimore metro area. We are not making this up. Please consider the impact this situation could have on your family, students, schools and property, and make the necessary arrangements if you believe the data is not lying.

Today's update

Jules, you are just trying to wig me out aren't you:eek: I heard a guy this morning at Boling AFB mention that they are monitoring possible even more than 2ft and the more snow next week could make it closer to 3ft.

I'm only 5'5 feet tall! Have to get out the snorkel gear to dig out the car next week;)

Tina, well hopefully it will be managable by Monday. lol

Wow, 3ft? Awesome.

BTW, someone asked on your other thread how the interview went...well?

Oh it went great! Of course I don't know that I wowed them enough but I really liked the staff and the job would be fantastic but challenging. I hope to hear something about it soon. Thank you for asking.

I'm back from the grocery store. I was smart going today because it wasn't crowded! I bought ingredients to make a big pot of soup on Saturday. :goodvibes I hope I didn't forget anything because I don't want to hit the store again tomorrow. We're been geared up with Superbowl snacks already. Snow storm + Superbowl = Crazy Grocery Crowd!

The predictions on Foot's website are generally pretty accurate, but I hope that we get the minimal amount of snow that he and the other forecasters are predicting. I am so ready for spring!!

I hope those of your with travel plans this weekend will get to your destinations OK and will stay safe.

School just called...4th snowday tomorrow...aghhhh!!!!

I too am ready for spring! I am tired of the snow already. Thankfully I have been able to get to and from work. If it is bad this weekend I'll just call in and take a personal day on Saturday.

My DD9 has had three snow days this week. Each school year there are five snow days already worked into the calendar. They used one last month and three this month so far. Right now I can't remember if any were used at all last fall. If this keeps up she'll be in school till almost the end of June.

This is crazy stuff! Two major snowstorms in MD in 1 winter!! We actually missed the December storm cause we left on the 17th for WDW!! and by the time we returned on the 28th it was practically all gone! I was a little bummed, but it will be kinda cool if this weekends storm hits as expected. This morning we had about 4 and 1/2 inches, but the roads were fine. My DD was upset because her school was on time even though the county schools were 2hrs late:rotfl: It was very pretty though. Everyone stock up, I did my regular shopping today, so I'm set. Be safe and enjoy the snow!
