Their site says...

If any one (1) of the three (3) dimensions listed below is exceeded, the bag or personal item is considered too large to be a carry-on item.

A carry-on bag must not exceed 24” long + 18” wide + 13” tall for a total combined linear measurement of 55 inches.

For a personal item, such as a briefcase, laptop, purse, or camera to fit under the seat in front of the customer, it must not exceed 17” long + 12” wide + 8.5” tall.

All carry-on items must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin. Any heavy item must be placed underneath the customer's seat. Any item with inflexible surfaces must be placed underneath the customer's seat or flat on the floor of an overhead bin.

Does this mean any carryon suitcase less than 13" tall will fit under the seat? Really? I don't recall the seat bottom being that far from the floor.

If that is the case, why the difference in height between the carryon and personal item?

I guess I am more or less asking if a standard rolling carryon suitcase would actually fit under a seat.

No, a standard rollerboard will not fit under the seat - it would have to be placed in the overhead compartment.

They do make an under seat rolling carry-on which would fit under the seat in front of you.

I just find it interesting since my roller is only 10" high. Based on their measurements I should be able to fit it under the seat. I just don't remember the seats having that much clearance.

Samsonite has some wheeled totes, designed to fit under the seat in front of you. Even those may be too big (17X13X8).

They have some "boarding bags" that might work. 16X11X8.5

A few years ago COSTCO had a good Samsonite package. 3 suitcase one to check, on to go in the overhead bin and one under the seat in front of you. They were each a little smaller then the maximum size. You could store them "nested".

I'd check some of the lightweight luggage such as Delsey Helium

Found it. This is a 2 piece version of the offer. It was a coupon offer. Current offer isn't great but the sizes work.

Oh, I'm not worried about my carryons fitting as I will be putting it overhead anyway. I just found the wording curious since they mentioned heavy items should be on the floor rather than overhead. Based on that the big luggage should be on the floor and the small luggage should be on top.

Anything under the seat must fit completely under the seat. It can't be sticking out near your feet because it could trip someone up trying to evacuate. A standard rollaboard would not fit underneath without sticking out.

At least some of the overhead bin have a posted maximum weight of around 84 lbs. Some bins can fit 3 roller bags. A legal bag, fully packed, can weigh 40 lbs or more.

You do the math. I think Airtran is just warning about packing your overhead bag too heavy. Some people pack a bag so heavy they can't lift it.

JMO but it's only a matter of time before more airlines limit the weight of bin bags (and weigh the bags).

Yeah, that is why I am packing all light clothes this time around. Heck, I think packing to avoid the fees is more work than just preparing for the vacation. heh

I think they should have a standard across the industry. Most of the legacy airlines maximum measurement is 45", where AirTran is 55". Southwest is 50", so I imagine they will go with that after the merger.

Sometimes packing to avoid the fees is too much work. I just add in the cost to check a bag when I price airfare.

Different airlines fly different equipment. Different size bins. Some airlines accept larger bin bags for competitive reasons, even if a bag only fits lengthwise. Other airlines may limit carryon bag size to reduce the number of passengers who "cheat" the airline out of checked bag fees.
