I have an August use year. If I add on past Aug. 1st, will I get 2010 points or will I need to wait until 2011 to get the added points? TIA!

You will get 2010 points assuming you are adding on through Disney. If you are adding on through resale it depends on what points are included in contract. Your best scenario would be to add on in July, then you would receive 2009 points and could bank them into 2010 (assuming Disney has any Aug UY points available).

Depending on which resort you add, you may also get 2009 points if you act quickly. The BLT offer was for 2009 points as a bonus if you were adding on with a future month's UY. Then, you would also receive the 2010 points in the appropriate month. Also, you would only pay prorated MF's on the 2010 points. So, double the points for 1/3 of the annual MF's... =)

If you purchase directly from Disney and the resort you are purchasing is not under construction they start you out with a full set of current Use Year points with your purchase. With an August UY, you are still in your 2009 UY (through the end of this month) so if you purchase between now and the end of July your first set of points will be 2009 UY points since that is your current UY. If you wait until Aug 1st or later to purchase, your first set of points will be Aug 2010 UY points since at that point you will be in your 2010 UY. There is a risk as you get to the last few weeks of your UY that they might run out of current UY points however. But if they still have them you will get them and will be able to bank them into your 2010 UY.

You will pay pro-rated dues on those 2009 points, starting from your purchase date. If you purchased tomorrow you would pay only 23 days of dues on those 2009 UY points! You will pay full dues on the 2010 points. With an August UY you will pay dues on 5/12ths of your 2010 UY points at 2010 rates and you will pay for the remaining 7/12ths of your 2010 UY points in your 2011 dues at 2011 rates.

I could be wrong, but if someone adds on right now with Disney, won't they simply pay a prorated amount as an owner on the # of points that they added on. So, if someone adds on 50 points at BLT on August 1st, regardless of UY, they will pay an additional 5 months worth of MF's for 2010.

If they have a UY that is still in its 2009 UY, then they get those 2009 UY points as those are current UY points, but the dues would be the same for someone adding on with an Aug UY or a June UY, even though a June UY would only get 2010 UY points. At least, that is how it was explained to me.

Yes I should have clarified that in my post. The number of day's worth of dues paid in 2010 is the same for anyone adding on at this time who receives current UY points at the time of purchase.

I was really responding to a comment by a PP that "you would only pay prorated MF's on the 2010 points". That is not the case if the OP receives 2009 points since it is only the current UY points that have pro-rated dues. Full dues will be paid (over two calendar years) on the next UY's points. So in the OP's case if they purchase before Aug 1, only the dues on the 2009 UY's points are discounted. They will pay full dues on the 2010 UY points with part of that payment being made in 2010 and the rest in 2011 dues at 2011 rates.

Thanks for clarifying. Just wanted to make sure I understood how things work as I will be adding on, hopefully, in 2011!

I have a question. I currently own june uy SSR, If I buy direct from disney, do I get to choose a UY like august or do I have to buy a june UY? thanks

If you buy direct from Disney, you will get points with a June use year.

The only way to get another use year is to buy enough points to buy a whole new contract and politely insist you want something else.

FWIW, managing two different use years (two different contracts) will take more time and effort than having all the points in one contract. You will have different banking deadlines and you cannot combine points from the two contracts to make a single night's reservation without doing a transfer between the contracts. You are only allowed to do that once per use year.

Sorry, I am behind in my readings so this may have already been covered...

So how does this work with a resort under construction such as Aulani? We have an Oct UY, if we buy in Sept, what happens regarding points? (or if the Bostonterrierlover buys in July - same scenario)

From what I have read, points for Aulani are starting in 2011. No UY is being given 2010.

Pro-rated dues begin on the later of your purchase date, the start of your initial Use Year and the occupancy date of the Unit you purchase. In other words, dues begin at the point in time when you can begin using your first set of points.

If you purchase Aulani in Sep 2010 and your first points are your Oct 2011 points but your occupancy date is prior to Oct 2011, then your dues will be pro-rated from Oct 1, 2011. If your occupancy date is later than Oct 1, 2011, then your dues will begin on your occupancy date since you will not be able to use your points until the Unit you purchased is ready for occupancy.
