Can I purchase an annual pass if I don't live in FLorida? And could I use that pass for a room discount?

Still trying to find a cheaper way to stay at one of the onsite properties!!

Thank you!!! Got a MUCH cheaper rate with an upgraded view plus now I may save 15% on the tickets too! Fingers crossed that this will all pan out. :)

Excellent! Fingers crossed for you too. :goodvibes

So I just learned that the pass has to be active before I get to the hotel. Soooooo now we're going to stop at Universal Studios on our way down to WDW so I can quickly walk in and out of the park! Now I have to figure out parking! Sometimes I really complicate things!!

Who told you that? You only need to show them (if they ask at all) your receipt and when you activate it bring it back to the desk.

When I called the 800 889 7275 number to ask the details, that's what the representative told me. I am SO happy you told me that the receipt will suffice. Otherwise, 5 of us would be sitting in a parking lot while my husband (whose name I put the pass in) ran through the park. Not exactly the most fun way to start our vacation!

Do you think we can buy our tickets at the hotel and use the annual pass for the discount, or will we need to buy them at the park when the pass is active?
:confused3

I'm not sure if you can purchase the tickets at the discount at the hotel. I'm thinking you probably have to get those at the park. What about buying them over the phone or online before you get there? I never buy tickets so I'm not any help - sorry! I'll see if I can find out. :)

The AP will have to be activated before you buy the tickets for the rest of the family.

That 15% will be taken off of the GATE price, which is more than the online price.

Honestly, get the AP for you (and no, you do not need it to be activated when you checkin, they understand that not everyone has them right in their hands), and use a place like undercovertourist.com for the Universal tickets. I haven't done the math recently but someone else did around here, and UCT is generally cheaper than the gate price - 15% discount for the AP.

Hey, while at the parks, when making just about ANY purchase (souvenirs or food), ask if they have an AP discount. We got discounts left and right on souvies and food with our Preferred, it was great! I think the only places that said no were the stand-alone popcorn carts.

I am staying at the APH rate, but won't have the preferred until after check-in. I currently have a power pass that I will be upgrading. I thought I had read here that I can just show it to the desk anytime during my stay...is that right?

When you check in, just ask when you need to show them the AP. They'll give you a time frame. Don't worry!

They may not even ask for the AP, so don't worry about it.

Checked into HRH this past June for 1 night using the APH rate. I went to Islands of Adventure ticket booth to purchase the pass then had my husband pick me up and we parked in the theme park garage and then walked over to Hard Rock to check in. I wasn't even asked for my annual pass. But the annual pass was scanned for the free parking at the parking garage. Some of our group stayed at an off-site condo and my sister and I am my kids stayed at Hard Rock for the early entry. Otherwise we would have just parked at Hard Rock and paid for parking at the hotel.

In hopes of giving back to the board in some small way, let me share the Annual Pass strategy I used successfully last month, during a four-night stay at the Hard Rock Hotel.

1.) Four months prior to trip - I reserved two rooms at APH rate, via the loewshotels website.

2.) Three months out - I Purchased one Preferred Annual Pass via the official universal website.

3.) One month out - I Purchased three discounted 4-day park-to-park tickets at my local AAA office. The price was very close, but slightly higher than Undercover Tourist. I wanted to lock in my ticket prices, as I was ( justifiably, it seems ;) ) nervous about ticket price hikes prior to my trip. We had a total of five in our party, but I deliberately left myself one to purchase in Orlando, in case HRH insisted on two APs to get the APH rate on two rooms.

4.) At check in, I was not asked for proof I had an annual pass. This was a relief, considering multiple Universal reservationists had insisted I would need one AP per room reserved at the APH rate.

5.) At the ticketing counter in the HRH lobby, I activated my Preferred Annual Pass purchased at step 2 above. It was a completely automated process through a kiosk, but there was a helpful attendant there to answer my questions as well. I now had my physical, credit-card-sized annual pass, printed on tyvek "paper".

6.) I was prepared to purchase the one remaining multi-day ticket I needed from the kiosk / ticket counter, but the the honest attendant stopped me, confiding that I would save a few more dollars by purchasing the ticket at the park ticket window, so that I could use the 15% AP discount. Nice guy! I believe tickets may be purchased at the hotel lobby for the same discount offered on the official Universal website, but I am not certain.

7.) Once our group had freshened up from our travels a bit, we made the ten minute walk to the entrance of Universal Studios. At the ticket window, I showed my newly-activated AP and purchased one 4-day park-to-park at a 15% discount. I paid with an American Express, and was told I was now eligible to use the AMEX lounge in the park. As it turned out, we never used the lounge, or even SAW it for that matter.

8.) Throughout our stay, I used the AP repeatedly for food and merch discounts. We saved $60-$70, on things we would have purchased either way, I would say. Coupled with the steep room discounts, buying a least one AP is a no-brainer.

I will confess that I entered our Universal trip with a heavy pro-Disney bias, but Universal totally won me over with it's world-class attractions, particularly the WWoHP, which definitely lived up to the hype. We mixed in a day at Legoland, and a day at SeaWorld, and had a wonderful vacation. The Hard Rock was a true luxury experience every bit as nice as the two Disney Deluxe resorts ( AKL and WL ) that I have personally experienced. Disney can't beat the convenience of being an easy walk from the theme parks and Citywalk restaurants, not to mention the amazing perk that is Universal Express!

I can't wait to return to Universal Orlando, but I wouldn't go back until my youngest child hits the magical height of 48" and doesn't have to sit out on so many rides.

I am very grateful for the wonderful tips and advice I received from this message board, particularly from damo, macraven, and metro west. We had a wonderful time, saved a bundle, and I looked like a trip-planning genius :thumbsup2, all thanks to the information I gleaned here.

Thanks
