We are thinking of getting annual passes for our trip this fall. Where is the best place to get the tickets and when are they activated? We want to book some Fastpass plus tickets before our trip, but how do we do that with not having annual passes yet? Thanks

You can order them from WDW.
You will personally activate them at any ticket booth or guest relations when you arrive at WDW.

Once you order the APs, you can link the order number ("voucher number") to your MDE account and you can THEN book advance FP+.
(The voucher number will likely just automatically appear in your MDE account when you order the APs.)

If you are staying at a WDW Resort, you can book advance FP+ starting 60 days before check-in and can book FP+ for every day of your trip (including check-out day.)

If you are NOT staying at a WDW Resort, you can book FP+ starting 30 days before your first park day (and then one-day-at-a-time after that,) and you can book FP+ for up to 7 days, total.

I thought you could Only buy thru Disney site! I got ours online and it was fast n easy.
They will be physically sent to you but
You will get a confirmation after purchase.
If you have the Disney app, they will also be listed/linked there ( each pass has a number) and you will be able to set ur fastpasses Still following those set of requirements etc...
When u get to the park, you will be asked for Proof for each pass .. Like if for resident etc) and they will Activate for you!
It was easy peasy.
And I love the app as well.
Hope that was clear...

Another option (to save some money) is to buy DISCOUNTED Magic Your Way tickets from one of the many on-line authorized ticket resellers.
(Undercover Tourist, etc.) Buy enough "days" to cover your entire trip.
You can then make advanced FP+ reservations based on those tickets.
Then, after you arrive, you can upgrade to AP and "keep" the discount that you got by buying via a discount seller, AND, keep your FP+ reservations.

Does the annual pass expire a year from purchase or a year from when activated at Disney?

a year from the first time you enter the park unless you are a FL resident and paying with the payment plan then it starts the day you first make a payment ( or this is what I was told when I was looking at getting an AP so things may have changed)

a year from the first time you enter the park...

Sorry, but that's not exactly the case.

An AP, regardless of when it is purchased/ordered, begins "counting down" its year of validity
on the date that it is ACTIVATED by the guest at WDW.
As I said in post #2 of this thread, a guest must personally activate an AP at any ticket booth or guest relations when at WDW.

So, if a guest activates a new AP on, say, Dec. 1, 2016, it will start counting down on that date,
whether the guest goes into a park on that day or not.

That AP will remain valid for use all the way to the end of park closure time on Dec. 1, 2017. (Yes, that is 366 days of validity.)
