annual pass start date

Just to confirm...the START date of every annual pass is the first date of actual use (using it to first enter a park with that pass)...CORRECT? And, how long does the 'get 3 months for free' deal last? This is how we bought our passes last time as well and had 15 months and loved it...but it's been a few years and we've had other annual passes with different rules since then, so I want to confirm some things before I purchase.
