Every year I am on the fence about buying a pass. Is the annual renewal rate always offered at a 15% discount. Is a discount always offered? Any help would be appreicated.

The renewal is always less than the cost of a new annual pass. Disney advertises it at 15%, but I have never double checked the math.

You just have to decide for yourself whether to renew or not, depending on when your next trip is. If your last trip was in January and your ap expires, and you aren't going back until August, I would buy a new pass instead of renewing.

My renewal period is the end of May and I renew every year even though my next trip isn't until December. I like having my photopass pictures available for the entire year. And I might want to work an extra trip in there sometime. ;) For me, it's worth the savings.

The math of it is, however, that a savings of 15% works out to be just about "one-and-a-half month's worth" (plus, a few days more.)

So, if you will not be going back to WDW within about one-and-a-half months of your AP expiration, it can make more sense to NOT
renew, but buy a new AP at the time of your next trip.
Then, THAT new AP will be good for a full year from the new start-point, and can possibly give you an additional trip during its later lifetime.

If you renew at the end of May, but don't go to WDW until December,
you are "saving" 15%, but (in effect) throwing away 7 months (58%) of your AP's value.

I did know it didn't make sense mathmatically to renew if it was so long between trips, but I like having my photopass pictures available for a year. I guess I shouldn't have used the term 'savings'. :)

If the pictures were taken while you had a valid AP, they will last for a year from the date they were taken. My AP expired in Jan, but I still can edit and download (at no charge) the pictures from our trips in Oct and Jan.

Can you renew with a discount at a lower tier?

Yes.
You can go "up" or down" in the type of AP and get the discount renewal price for the AP that you choose.

Agreed.

Thanks. I didn't know that about the pictures. I'll keep that in mind for next year. I did get an extra month this time when I renewed. ;) When next year rolls around, I'll probably still renew because I'm hoping to be retiring to Orlando by then. Can you change a regular renewal to a Florida renewal?
