I think I all ready know the answer to this question, but I wanted to be sure. DH & I will be going to WDW next month, and hope to make a trip during the summer. For sure we will be going to the F & WF earlier next year because we are taking DD and her husband and we have to work around her fall break. Therefore we will be purchasing an annual pass. In the past, I have bought my AP at TDS, but my local store closed last winter. If I order passes direct from Disney will they send me vouchers like TDS that I will need to activate once I arrive, or will they become valid on the day of purchase? TIA!

If you order from Disney online you will receive a voucher.

I ordered ours by calling Disney and they sent vouchers that I had to activate once I got there. They are good for one year from the date you activate them. Hope this helps with your question.

We ordered our APs from Disney. We received vouchers and had them activated at the ticket window at Epcot. It only took a few minutes to do.

You have to have a biometric scan to use an AP so I imagine that no AP is activated until they record the biometrics. So, if you haven't had your fingers measured, your AP is not activated.

When we ordered our APs online, we requested Will Call (saved the $3.00 shipping). We were then directed to a confirmation page that I printed out and also got a confirmation email with a barcode on it.

When we arrived at Disney, I went to the first available ticket window at the Studios and gave them a printout of the emails that I received and our drivers licenses, and 5 minutes later had active APs.

We also bought our sons' 7-day PHPs that way. One nice thing they told me was if I keep the email with the bar code on it, if the tickets are lost, we can bring a new printout of that email and they can replace the tickets. No need to copy the back.

Well technically that's true, but if you go to Guest Services and buy and AP today, it will have an expiration date of 9/13/05 on it. You could turn around and go home and not use it for the first time until Christmas, but it will still have an expiration date of 9/13/05 on it. When people on the boards refer to it being "activated" this is usually what they are referring to. The same actually holds true for a voucher. When I turn it in for the actual AP, they put the expiration date on it at that time, in essence activating the AP and starting the clock ticking. When you use it for the first time to gain admittance to the park really is meaningless.
