Annual pass - purchase ahead of time?

Travelling to Orlando in October - this time plan on purchasing an annual pass. We are staying offsite for the first leg of our trip, onsite for the second leg.

Is there any reason I should/should not my annual pass in advance of our trip? I was thinking I would purchase ahead of time, and the night before our first visit to the parks I would stop by downtown disney to get my pass activated. If I have to stop by guest services to get it activated in any event, is there any point of purchasing ahead off time? Other than price protection in the event ticket prices go up?

You can make your fast passes early if you purchase ahead of time.

You get a voucher for the AP and the clock doesn't start ticking until you activate it.
