Annual pass expiration date

What happens if we don't activate the annual pass by the "activate by" date? Do we lose the pass and the money we paid for it? Can we only activate the pass in person at the park? Thanks!

1. Nope. You can use the amount originally paid toward buying a new AP or AP certificate.
2. Yes.

An AP certificate remains valid for many years. At this time they don't "expire" until the end of 2030.

I agree with all but the last statement. Generally AP certificates are valid until 2030.
However there are sometimes special AP deals with earlier "activate by" dated such as the DVC deal they just announced last week. Those AP (giving DVC owners a platinum plus pass for the price of the gold) have to be activated by the end of 2018 according to the fine print.
