Ive got a student who has terrible attendance at college, yet again she was off today so I rang her at home to ask why. She answered and said that she was feeling ill, straight away she was very defensive (she is the stroppiest girl you could ever meet!) but I refused to be drawn into an argument and just said that hopefully I would see her soon. 10 mins later her mum rings the office shouting the odds and saying that her daughter had phoned her at work saying I had been shouting at her and had been really horrible to her!! Thankfully there was another teacher sat next to me when I had called who could back me up in that one of that happened. It is so frustrating that some students will never take any responsibility for their own problems and instead just try to blame the teacher! :headache:

you were lucky that you had someone to back you up !! No doubt her mum thinks her daughter can do no wrong

You have to look at it this way, she is the one losing out and with one less student you have a little bit more time with the ones who have bothered to turn up.

You could write her a letter (and keep a copy for yourself) detailing her absences and putting you hope that she is ok etc and that if she wants to have a meeting to discuss anything this can be arranged, that sort of thing.

I think the cane should come back!! ;)

That must be really annoying and really, she will be the one to blame come the end of the school year. We don't have that problem at the Sixth Form I attend as many people who would be tempted to stay at home get EMA for attending so most people show up. Then again, the come in and then don't do the work!
