Announcement by Disney In NYC 9/23/10

THIS JUST IN.

This is the real song they're using:

Yo ho, yo ho, a castle pic for me
We smile, we grimace, we gander, and squint,
Look up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We’re families and couples from Vegas to Flint,
Look up me 'earties, yo ho.

I sooo want this on Itunes:lmao:

Do you think they will have these projections up from the minute they light up the castle to the very last guest leaving during the icecle decorated castle at Xmas? I'm going next December and would be a little disappointed to have them in my pictures?

Ok, one last post on the subject then I'll quit, honest.

Hopefully this is allowed mods? I saw a tweet go by from attractions magazine that I thought was so funny I had to share:

"See what projections on a castle look like during the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter"

then they have a YouTube link to the opening show (trying to get the link, sorry)

I thought it was funny ;)

This is quite honestly the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. Leave the castle alone for God's sake.

I think that projections on the castle is a pretty cool idea. I didn't see the announcement (so correct me if I'm wrong), but I heard that it will be for a show. And needless to say, shows don't last all night. So you'll still be able to see the castle in its classic glory. And hopefully the pictures will be more candid than just people normally posing. To some, that might not sound like much of a differnece, but those candid shots will definitely envoke emotion, and will ultimately touch complete stangers.

It's also a good way to keep people in the park longer; especially when it comes to ways to make the locals stick around. I'll bet that there are a lot of people who want to see if they "made the castle".

What a brilliant marketing strategy! Free marketing(send in your pics and videos) and sell more Photopass. Not to mention people staying in the park to see their photo at night.

I've seen the castle-cake (yuck) and the gold accents (very nice). Was hoping not to see the castle cake since that was the "special" feature the last time I was there.

I'm disappointed that there will not be more for the 40th anniversary since it's our 20th anniversary, and our first trip together with our children in 20 years. I'm also wondering how hard it will be for those of us who don't go to the park every year (or several times a year) to get the photopass people to take our picture for our family memories (not to have projected on the castle). I'm seeing a lot of demand for the photographers' attention with this promotion. People who usually wouldn't be interested in doing this will be after the photographers to have their family pictures taken and put on the castle. Fabulous.

Wondering if it will still be worth $99 to purchase the photopass (or if they'll be raising the price)? Hmmm :confused3

I had the same thought, cindyland--I hope this means there will be an increase in photopass photographers! It used to be you couldn't turn around without one of them asking to take your picture, but the last couple of years I've really had to hunt them down (other than in the obvious places, like in front of each park's "icon").

I think the castle thing is kinda cool.

It looks to be a show as opposed to a continuous thing.

Right, I see this as being something of the equivalent of the castle lighting during the holidays, and not replacing anything or being there beyond a limited time of the day. And he said it wouldn't even be every day.

It looked better than I expected. I think it would be neat if Tinkerbell just randomly flew around the castle at times...

From what they said and how it was explained it seems that pictures will be projected on to the castle. I don't recall anything being mentioned of changing the castle. If it's an hour or few every night they decide to show these projections I don't see the big deal. It's still the castle. They're not turning it into a giant picture frame or anything. I'll have to wait to see it for myself but I think the majority of visitors, especially the first timers, would love to see a part of their vacation projected onto the castle. I know I would. I'm a purist as much as the next person and believe me there have been plenty of changes that I have turned my nose up to. All these changes and future changes are not going to change the fact that I love WDW and in the grand scheme of things shouldn't affect how much I enjoy any given day in the parks.

Does this castle make me look FAT?:rolleyes1
:rotfl:

OMGOODNESS....wishing it was anything but that. :mad:This way Disney can use people's free photos and free videos instead of paying actors, models etc for cheaper advertising? U-G-H
I get this. I don't mind Disney wanting to capture those "real" moments and memories, but something in return would be nice if you actually get used in the advertising. Appearing in just the castle show for free, I'm fine with. But if you just entering the park means they can take your photo and use it in a commercial with no compensation, that irks me. It doesn't have to be much, but an exclusive pin, a park pass, etc. Granted there are plenty of people willing to do this for free, so I guess it doesn't matter.

[My thought is I don't want my children's photo up on the castle, I don't let just anyone see photo's of them, So how are they going to get around privacy laws.

Are they going to say that by entering the park you are allowing photos of yourself to be used for publicity and are owned by Disney???
Ding ding ding! Yes, they are going to say you entering the park means you consent to Disney owning any images they capture of you. (In that case, can I get a discount on the crazy ticket price? :wizard: )

I don't think this is a bad promotion, and I might enjoy a 5-10 minute evening show with Disney music and pictures on the castle. I do agree that this wasn't an exciting announcement in light of the hype leading up to it.

I think the only photos and videos that are going to be used for commercials/advertising are the ones that people send in on their own. I haven't clicked through the agreements yet or tried to upload anything so I am not sure of the wording but I am sure it basically turns over the rights for them to use that video or photo as they wish in advertising. I am not one all about getting somethig for "free" from Disney but I do agree, it would be nice if there was a token gift ($25 gift card, fast passes free snack whatever) for those that were used in advertising. Just as a thnk you. But if one sends in their photos/videos even though there is no token gift involved I can't complain about that either.

As far as the photos on the castle I have no problem with that as I know many are having now. A pp not the one quoted here said that she (or he not sure right now) that the didn't want photos of her children on the castle and they don't allow just anyone to see photos of their children. I get what you are saying here but looking at it in another way... When you use photo pass, Disney owns those photos the copyright of those photos until you buy the copyright from them so technically by allowing your photo to be taken by photo pass you are already now giving them ownwership of those images. So that is not changing it is just that some of those images may end up on the castle for a few seconds at night. If you do not want that to happen do not use Photopass. It is really that simple and it alleviates now and later any chance of Disney ever using images of you or your children. Photopass people will use your own camera just decline the use of the photopass camera. Also many Disney guests will take a photo of you with your camera so you really shouldn't be out any photos by not using photopass. I also will note that just by walking through the Disney parks you are in dozens of other people's photos. There really aren't privacy rights when you go into a Disney Park as far as not being photographed. Disney won't photograph you (well aside from the surveillance) unless you walk up and ask Photopass to maybe they might do a promo shot from time to time in which guest in the background are in the photo but I would think that would be pretty obvious. That doesn't stop you from being photographed by others. Just think of all the photo threads here on the Dis sometimes people are in the background of photos posted and actually notice themselves in it other times people take photos of others doing something. wearing something that the photographer finds amusing and posts it. Look around next time you are at WDW and you will suddenly realize how many photos that other people have taken you and your children will be in. In a place like WDW it is really unavoidable. The photos on the castle will only be photos that have been submitted by guest or photopass photos so there is really no fear of your children ending up in a photo on the castle unless you use photopass or y ou submit your own photos and videos.

I was going to say that disney may introduce a system where your card is marked that the photos are not to be used in the promotion (castle or worldwide media), but we are talking about disney and lets face it, they dont seem to be able to get a website working let alone some this technical.

Now i've heard they wont be playing these photos all evening i'm alot happier - I just wont watch the castle while that shows on and hey presto - it wont bother me!! Its a simple solution which many people who are moaning about it are forgetting
