Anniversary race suggestions (non-Disney)

The marathon race weekend in my hometown is celebrating its 10th anniversary next year, and is holding a contest to get ideas to make the event extra special.

It is not an overly huge event, maybe 2,000 – 3,000 runners for all races, so I highly doubt the budget would allow for something as spectacular as Disney or other big city races may have.

Any suggestions from other WISHers to help my entry for the contest? Perhaps you may have seen cool ideas in other races that I could borrow?

Or if anyone wants to travel to eastern Canada for a scenic marathon next fall and win accommodations in a posh hotel, pm and me and I can give you info to enter for yourself!

I bet that has to be a beautiful race regardless! I have seen pictures of the area, but have never traveled there. May be one to add to next year's list.

What kind of theme does the race usually have? All the Anniversary races I have run in have extra special medals, some have local concerts with local musicians, and there are some things that actually might not cost you anything, but work more as a PR move to get more people to come and visit. I wonder about all the things the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did on their visit and if any of those could be incorporated into the race celebrations? I just remember them doing the dragon boat stuff and that is one thing I find to be so much fun.
