Hi guys,
my husband just surprised me for our 12th wedding anniversary with a trip to WDW for this Sept. :lovestruc
He spoke to my boss and made sure I could get the time off from work and organized for his parents to come down and babysit the kids for a week while we are away. Plus he booked us at the Polynesian!
:cool1::jumping1::banana:

He decided to tell me in advance so that I could plan out the trip because he knows i enjoy making the ADR and choosing the FPs. For an extra special treat we decided to book the Wild Africa Trek at Animal Kingdom. For $296 each, the 3 hour tour includes a meal and pictures taken by a professional photographer of us on the tour.

I am mentioning this because I was thinking of surprising him with a professional photo shoot of the two of us during the trip. We don't really have nice pictures of just the two of us, except those from our wedding 12 years ago. So I want to hire an outside photographer to come and take some nice shots of us to commemorate the moment. I am not a huge fan of Disney Photographers and find their prices too high for what you get.

I don't know if anyone read my Vow Renewal post a while back, but if you did, you would have remembered that I had to cancel it due to a death in the family. After that we just decided to forget the vow renewal completely since it was just too expensive and decided to use the money on a nice family vacation instead. In the end, I did not regret our decision and we had one of the best family vacations ever! But now, I feel like this trip, is my husbands way of making up for the cancelled vow renewal and I want to make it special for him too.

Ok so here is my dilemma. I contacted a few photographers in the area. One of the photographers I contacted is Jamie DiOrio. As soon as I saw her pictures, I fell in love with her. You can see her portfolio here: http://www.jaimediorio.com/photos/
She responded quickly and after a couple of emails, we clicked right away. She is this wonderful bubbly person and I really would love to use her. The problem is that her smallest package is a two hour photo session that would cost me $475. Since I'm Canadian, I have calculated that it would cost me $600 CAD with the exchange. Ouch! I think her price is very reasonable for what it includes, but it's a little high for my budget. Since I already splurged on the Wild Africa Trek and have planed to dine at a few signature restaurants, this photo shoot will push my budget over my comfort zone!
The good thing is that she can do the photo shoot during the week as to avoid large crowds and is pretty open on her dates which is fun because it give me much more liberty o which day I want to do this. She would take pictures of us in different locations around WDW. Her price included 2 hours and all of the edited digital images (about 45) on an online gallery that I can download.

I did get a second quote from another photographer, Rania Marie Photography, for a half hour session. Her work is also very nice. Here is her website: http://raniamariephoto.com/
Rania's emails were very professional but it was all business. There was no warmth, compared to Jamie. The good thing is that Rania's half hour session would cost me $175 which is much more affordable in my budget. She said that she can take around 25-50 pictures in that half hour time frame. The bad thing is that she's only available on Sundays around sunset. That means that I would need to do my photoshoot on my arrival day. My flight is early that day and I should be at the resort by noon but I don't know if I like the idea of doing it that day since I might be tired from the early flight and I don't want to feel rushed.

What should I do?

Help!

First of all, WOW! What an amazing gift your husband has planned for you!

Some thoughts...

1) I cannot stress enough how important it is to feel comfortable with your photographer. Relationships can make or break photo sessions and the way you look in the photos.

2) Photographers are usually pretty flexible—their packages are often just a starting point. Considering that you're investigating booking a 30-minute session with one photographer, I'll bet the other would be willing to do a 1-hour shoot with you for less.

3) If you are considering having your hair and makeup done, you may want more time than the Sunday-shoot plan allows. Not to add another expense to your trip, but I highly recommend professional cosmetology for photo sessions. There are plenty of local artists who will come to your hotel room for the same price or less than the on-site salons charge, and that way you can choose an artist based on his/her portfolio. Even women who are no-makeup types in everyday life benefit from a light-handed application to make them look their best in photos.

I know that is why I really want to choose Jaimie. I asked if she can do an hour photoshoot instead and unfortunately she does not offer this. She insists that two hours is what it takes for a successful photoshoot for the couple to start feeling more relaxed and for the shots to be less static. She knows her profession and I respect that. I just don't know if I feel comfortable spending that amount.

I would love to do my hair and makeup with a professional. The Sunday shoot would definitely be problematic for that. But then again, I don't know if I can afford to add more expenses if I choose Jamie.

So. Confused!

Are you open to looking at different photographers than the 2 you have found? There are a whole bunch that do Disney weddings that I'm sure also do portrait sessions. Here's some we looked at when deciding on our wedding:

The Roots (who will be our wedding photographers, and did our engagement pics)
Elle Baez
Regina Hyman
Jason Angelini
Emily Gilbert
Vicki and David Arndt

There are more too. Not sure if you're open to checking them out, but at least it can give you some more options.

And I completely agree with Carrie about getting your makeup done (hair too!). I do not wear makeup in real life, but did for our engagement pics. I'm sure our wonderful photographers played a big part, but I must say I looked fabulous, and definitely would not have been even close to that without the hair and makeup professionally done!

Oh great, thank you so much. I will look into them for sure!

We used Randy Chapman for our wedding photos and again for a family photoshoot last year. The family session was $200 plus tax for an hour with all images on a disc.

My friend is in Jacksonville but travels for sessions. At one time I think she mentioned wanting to do something in WDW. Her name is Amanda Robinson and she's pretty reasonably priced and her work is good.

Wow, what great pics! Your daughter is the cutest thing ever by the way!

Thanks guys, I finally ended up contacting two more photographers and they both quoted me for a one hour session between $200-$250 range. This price is more reasonable in my budget and they can both shoot during the week when I have more freedom.
I am still a little reluctant on not using Jaime DiOrio because our personalities just clicked and because I am still crazy about her style of photography.

I am now thinking of just telling my husband about the photo shoot so that I could get his input. It is a lot of money and I want to make sure he is just as happy as I with the end result. I will let you know his reaction and who we decided to go with.:scratchin

I think one hour would be fine. 2 hours is a long time for just two people. I think Emily Gilbert looks great!

Major change of plan! I just spoke to my husband about the photo shoot. I wanted to surprise him with it but I just felt like I wanted his opinion in which photographer to choose. Thank goodness I did. He told me to not book anything because he already had something planned for us on this vacation that he could not yet divulge. Another surprise?!
:earseek:
I don't know what he has planned but it sounded important. He was all frazzled when I told him about the photographer. He finally had to tell me he had something else planned. Poor guy, I hope I didn't ruin it for him.
But now I am dying of curiosity!

Anyway, I just contacted the photographers to let them know.

Thank you all for your help! I was stressing for nothing. I guess things just have a way working themselves out

First of all, what a wonderful trip for you and your DH. My DH and I were married at Disney and we used an outside photographer, Misty Miotto. Not sure if she is still doing Disney weddings but we also used her for our engagement photos. Sounds like you DH has that part covered.

I would suggest getting Memory Maker added to your tickets if you do not have it already. We have AP's this year so we got it included and had the best time in Disney getting pictures taken. As I think Disney is pushing this at the moment, there were tons of photographers around the parks and Disney Springs. Of course they are not as personalized as your own photo session, but we had some great photographers get some great shots. They also do special Magic Shots and when they take the pictures, they show up on your My Disney Experience app within a few minutes. You also get ride photos too. When you get home you can add all different types of fames and wording to your photos. I have saved them all to my Shutterfly account and am in the process of making a Shutterfly album with all the pictures.

Have a wonderful time in Disney.

Linda

Wow, thanks for the great suggestion. I completely forgot that Disney offers the Memory Maker. I definitely want some pics of us around the park and it's nice that we can both be in the shots! I just checked the price and it is totally affordable, will add this for sure. Thanks!
:thumbsup2
By the way, what are special Magic Shots?

Since I am not doing the photographer thing anymore, I still want to surprise my husband with something special. Do any of you have suggestion? Something fairly inexpensive if preferable.;)

Sorry, not working. Saying file too large. What they do is put Tinkerbell in the shot or some other characters. Make sure to ask about magic shots. Not all photographer are able to do this.
